Train Horns

i just recently purchased a set of train horns on Ebay  (im a small town hick what can i say) , came with compressor/wiring/horns almost everything you need. the kit says 150psi on the box but the pressure switch on the compressor is only 85psi on/115psi off. i noticed this because i mounted them underneath the truck facing forward tucked under pretty good but they still got packed full on snow and sand sounded like crap. so i took them off and cleaned them up diamprams and all. jerry rigged them to the shop compressor (125psi) and they worked...reeeaaaaallly work LOL. but anyways so i thought about it, found a good spot in behing the front clip for them facing down, the bells are covered by the bumper so i shouldnt have issues that way anymore. heres my problem, after the air solenoid i ran a "T" fitting (1/8 NPT) and i got them all routed up/wired up(two horns). got everything all done gave them a toot and one horn sounded bad WTF  . its always the horn with the 8 inch longer hose off of the solenoid. so off came the front clip, found a plug, plugged on end of the "T" horn one horn by itself was still really loud, switched the plug tried the other horn same thing louder than $Hl# by itself. so one horn is taking air priority over the other. the sticker on the compressor says working pressure 130-150 psi too. should i just find a higher psi pressure switch? will this fix the problem??

add one more thing i made sure all the hoses arent kinked or bent in a manner to defect air flow, verified solenoid was opening all the way too. i bet if i find a 130-150 switch they'll shake the earth a little better TOGETHER emphasis on together tell me what you guys figure

how do you have the "T" set up? the two horns need to be tied in on the "legs" of the T that point at each other, the perpendicular leg should be coming from your air supply. If that is setup correctly then you may just need more air pressure.

I've always liked train horns, the only downside was mounting a compressor and air tank. the horns themselves should be fine right behind the front grille pointing straight down.

Were they working properly before you took them off to clean them? What NickV said would probably have an impact but there may be a chance the compressor wasn't sized right for the airflow needed for both horns so the bigger horn loses out.

Speaking of which, we were driving down the street, and a guy with train horns laid them on as a little hatch-back was crossing the tracks. Guy pretty much s**t his pants!

Cruel, yes... But funny as hell.

My thoughts are,, is the compressor big enough to handle both of them at once?,,, might try putting a small tank and feed off from that. Just a thought.. DAve

Just watch out where you use them and who is around. Knew a guy just north of Toronto who had a train horn on his pick up and he told EVERYONE and used it often to tell the whole town he was arriving and leaving town (from a mile out of town). Long and short of it is the OPP were NOT amused when they heard it. The ONLY thing that saved him from a large ticket was the horns were not hooked up to the truck OEM horns (which still worked).

You may want to ask one of the local RCMP what you can use, it normal goes by the horn DB. Or ask via email the Alberta DMV or local trucker.

I'm thinking that would be even funnier to do behind a school bus as it crosses the tracks.................probably catch all kinds a hell for it tho!!

How about a sound clip? Or maybe a link to the kit you bought? I have listened to a few clips off vendors web sites and they usually sound like chit on my tin can speakers.

sorry to dig this up, but does anyone know if installing train horns will prevent the truck from passing state inspection?

just wire it to it's own dedicated switch instead of using the regular horn wiring. if you use your primary horn switch for the train horns they will probably tell you it's a little excessive.... after they change their drawers lol
