Replacing Factory Speakers

I have a 01 Sierra and it sounds like I blew the right speaker in the front door. The vibration is driving me crazy. I ordered a pair of Infinity Reference 6022si speakers as replacements. Today I took a closer look at the speaker grills and it looks like I have a 6 speaker system. It looks like I have a separate woofer and tweeter in the front doors. It also looks like the tweeter fell out of whatever it was mounted to. I’m beginning to suspect that is the problem and if I screw it back in I’ll be good to go. Now since I already ordered replacements and if it will improve the sound I figure I might as well swap them out.

What would you do? If it’s just a loose tweeter causing the distortion, would you just screw it in and return the replacements or would you replace the original woofers with the Infinities. If you install the Infinities which are 2 way speakers would you still leave the tweeters hookup or would you disconnect the tweeters?

Are there any issued I should be concerned with regarding ohms, watts, sensitivity, crossover or any of that other stuff I really don’t understand?

Thanks for the replies.

Those tweeters dont come loose they break. I would loose the tweets and install the co-axs. I think your factory woofers are 8 ohms.

Since your in there anyway to fix or replace the tweeter you may as well swap out the factory speakers. If yours look like mine did(see my post) your gonna like the sound of the new ones. I used the same speakers, easy install & good bang for the $.

I agree, if yougo through thrugh the work of removing the panel and everything, you might as well replace them. I removed the tweeters and used the space there to mount my new infinity tweeters and crossover. Worked out well. I have heard of people with 2 way replacements just deleting the factory tweeter, still sounds MUCH beter than than the factory without a separate tweeter. It would be a great stock setup if there was a good crossover network in there.

So with the factory 6 speaker systems there is no crossover? What is GM using to seperate the signals for the tweeters and woofers in the front doors?

I had the same issue with my 02 silverado and the tweeter coming loose in the drivers door. I just remounted it with a screw and got rid of the factory way of mounting it. I also installed new Infinities like what you have because my front speakers were shot. The sound wasn't the same after the install. It seemed I lost my bass. So I just figured since I'm keeping my truck to upgrade the head unit and replace the rear speakers as well and install a sub. I did keep the factory tweeters.

Now I really like the new sound and wish I did it sooner.

I don't know for sure because i have not replaced my front speakers yet but you don't actually need a big elaborate crossover to seperate the signal to your tweeter. a simple capacitor wired in line can do the job and is not as easy to find or as costly and time consuming to install as a large crossover. could be wired directly to the back of the tweeter. have you pulled the tweeters yet?

Even if you have a high end factory audio system in your vehicle it is only high end by GM standards.
