Well I Did The Oil Change.....

and found the magnet covered in crud. plus the oil that came out looked terrible (dealer oil change for CPO). i cleaned every thing up, and since i had some left over from when i did the oil change on the vette i used the castrol edge 5w30. to my surprise the truck runs smoother and completely got rid of the rough idle issue i was having. that is a bonus right there in itself cause i went and hunted that rough idle issue for about a week and never was satisfied till now.

now i will have to see if the truck continues to eat oil. in the 3500 miles i put on the truck it required a quart to be added. (1/2 at about 1500 and 1/2 at about 2500 miles on the oil). hopefully i will report back that the truck doesn't eat oil anymore and i can get 6-7k miles out of the oil change.

if you still have the oil in a container that started clean, stir it and send a sample to Blackstone labs.

A qt of oil in 3k miles. Sounds excessive.

it did to me too but when it started happening i did a search on here and found that to be on the high end of norm. i am thinking the dealer put the bare minimum in when they did the change and used the cheapest most unrefined oil they could find. i will see and report back on how the motor reacts with better oil. i am hoping it should do much better.

If it is using a lot of oil you might consider switching to a high mileage formula. I started putting GTX high mileage (green bottle) in my old truck with 180,000 miles on it. It slowed down the oil usage some. I'm pretty sure there are no negative affects and it would be better for the motor to not be burning oil. But thats just my thoughts. Anybody can feel free to add there thoughts.

My '94 was using right at a full quart between oil changes. (3,500 miles) My '04 is using less than a quart between a change not sure how much exactly. I'm thinking maybe 1/2 or less.

I used the gtx hi mileage in my truck and the only time i put oil in was at oil changes. It's up to 6 bucks a litre here. Gone are the days of the 30 dollar oil change.

The engine may not actually burning the oil per say but the oil may just be evaporating from the heat of the engine, its called volatility. It may be what you have to put up with using the brand of oil you are using.

Volatization is a term used to describe what happens to a fluid as it is heated to the point it begins to "boil off." Upon reaching a certain temperature, oil will begin to lose some of its lighter weight molecules as they "boil off" and leave heavier weight molecules behind. Not only does this cause higher oil consumption, this process can also cause increased viscosity making the oil more difficult to circulate through the lubrication system.
