Why No Manual Shift?

Hi all,

Does anyone know why GM does not offer a manual transmission anymore? I have an 09 silverado with shifting issues. I am sick of the automatic shiffting issues with my truck. I took it to the dealer because the truck seems to have a lack of power. I told them about the sporratic shifting patterns with hopes of getting that resolved while it was in service. But of course there are no codes in the computer and I guess a test drive is out of the question so I was told nothing was wrong. I am sick of making a payment on this thing every month (on shcedule) and my truck running and shifting good one day and like sh-t the next. I guess if the truck is on fire you are ok as long as there are no codes in the computer? Now that I have vented yet once again, do your trucks run consistent on a daily basis. I know weather plays a role in performance but I am in this truck every day and notice a BIG difference from time to time. Is there any kind of monitor that can be plugged in similar to a data log cable to determine what is going on? The manual transmission would solve the sporratic shifting. I have had two silverado's with manual trannys and loved them. Had trade due to high mileage. If I had known that the manual tranny's were going to be taken away and that the 4speed autos still sucked I would rebuilt my 2002 silverado.

Get an aftermarket Black Bear Performance tune. All your troubles will be gone.

GM and other MFR's did away with manual transmissions due to low volume. Only 2% of truck owners want a manual, just not profitable.

In your case you need to get the service manager involved and let him drive your vehicle a couple of days to see whats going on. Not all problems are related to the engine management system.

I had one in a 2500hd and you are right he is awesome with tuning. I am just concerned that something is going on other than nannies. I am telling you some times this thing is pathetically weak.

I agree not many people want them. But they could offer this as a special order package or something. As far as the service manager goes, man, he does not seem to really care. I tried another local dealer and they did not seem to care either. Probably because I did not buy from them. That is the way it seems to work around here. I do not know what to do. But I do know I am getting extremely frusturated with this. The dealers act like you just want something to complain about. Do they not know I have better things to do than make sh-t up and spend all day at the dealer. Thanks everyone for the replies. Anyone else?

After reading your OP again I noticed your complaint about inconsistent problems. This does need to be addressed at the service level for sure. As redvett stated go up the chain at the dealer and get your problem looked into.

Gm or any other MFR has to certify there engine family's separately with the EPA so the auto trans and manual trans have to be certified separately and before i retired a certified family 5.3 A4 for instance cost a MFR $1000000+ in 1997 and the 5.3 manual would be another Million, just does not make economic sense for about 20000 vehicles.

My last silverado was a 5 speed stick with a 350 and it was a great truck...lots of power and could tow a one car trailer loaded and still get 15 mpg at 65 to 70 mph. My new silverado appears to just be a decent truck with a gas guzzling motor when it comes to towing....what happened in the last 13 years ???...I'm going on a 600 mile trip and towing so I'll make a decision here after it as to what kind of truck GM is making

I prefer manual transmissions myself but I can live with an automatic in a full size pickup. What bothers me though is that even small compact cars are predominantly automatic now and manuals are disappearing fast. Americans as a nation have become too lazy to drive manuals I guess. In other countries, the reverse is true. When I was in Rio de Janeiro in 1999, they did not have a single vehicle with an automatic transmission at the local car rental agency. Everything was manual, even their vans.

I like manual transmission too. Here in the USA not many people want manual transmission. In Mexico they offer the silverado work truck with 4.3 V6 with manual transmission and the Silverado 3500 HD chassis cab 6.0L manual transmission. See pictures.

What I understand is that it's been determined that Automatics get slightly better fuel economy as compared to manuals and that's the big reason your seeing no more manuals in the cars and trucks now. Saves the automakers money in the long run.

No, manuals are direct drive and have overdrive as well. In automatics there will always be some slippage in the torque converter when not locked.. I had manuals for years and they always got better gas mileage than their auto counterparts.

people just don't want to shift gears.

Sounds like there might be a place in the market for an aftermarket manual transmission kit for trucks. Throw a TREMEC TKO 600 5sp in one or go with the 6 sp. :uhoh:
