Transfer Case, Front & Rear Differentials

Recommended Posts

I think i posted this a year ago but cant seem to find it, getting ready to do the tranny filter/fluid again and would like to get the differentials and transfer case up to date, just looking to see exactly what goes in the front and rear and what weight? does the trans case get the dex-6 that the 4l85e gets?

I was looking for what to run in the transfer case for a long time then I bought a pump rub kit from mechant automotive and they said to fill it up with ATF. As for the rear diff I used royal purple 75w90 with a little bit of Lucas thown in there. Now I believe the front is 80w90 but I'm not 100 percent on that

Front and rear can use 75w-90

+1 for front and rear diffs.

As for the transfer case since it is a 2500 and I don't believe they put the auto transfer case in them, so you can use Dexron VI fluid.

Dexron VI can't be used some of the old TC's, it not been validated to be safe to use.

Need to find out which TC is in the truck.

I see 3 listed;

BW4482-NR4

BW4481-NR3 AWD

NP8 - 2-sp push button control auto (use special fluid)

Good catch, the NR3 uses the Dexron VI, the NR4 is Dexron IIIH and the NP8 is for the Autotrac II GM fluid.

thanks guys.. so im gonna use synthetic 75 90 for the diffs, but still a little confused about the transfer case

its an 04 2500 4l85e, i put dex-6 in the tranny and it works/shift great, but your saying the transfer case gets something different?

Yeah, can you look and see what code you have for the Tcase? Is one of the codes above listed?

So whats comparable in synthetic to gm auto trac ?

There isn't anything comparable. You have to use the GM AutotracII. It is specific to GM and no other manufacture is making a replacement. The last time I checked a qt at the dealer was $6 I think.
