Poor Quality Tailgate Cap (soft Plastic)

I've had my truck several months now and have about 5k mikes on it. I use it to tow so I don't haul stuff very often, but the cap on the tail gate already has several gouges and marks in it. I'm very careful with my truck, these marks did not come from rough use, the plastic is just plain soft. I had my 02 Chevy for 8 years and it didn't have this many marks on the tail gate cap.

 

How is everyone's tailgate cap holding up?

hell no. day 2 after buying my truck i put some wood back there and it jacked it all up. i was pretty pissed at the time.

same here...hauled some light tree branches a week after I bought it and was surprised at the damage to the tailgate cap.

Mine is also scratched bad. Im thinking of replacing mine with a diamond plate cap.

Agreed. I painted mine and 2 weeks later it was scuffed and cut up. Painted it again and lasted another month, now I just gave up. I think I'm gonna buy the HD tailgate cap which seems to be a little stronger.

Don't bother. My truck is an HD and it sucks too. Very soft.

Honestly, if you intend to use your truck like a truck, spray in bedliner, and diamond pattern aluminum rail and tailgate caps are a must. The OEM plastic ones are worthless. My truck came with factory bed rail caps and they suck too. They scratch way too easily. And I am very careful with my truck.

The GMT-900s are definitely not as stout as the GMT-800's but mine on my 2000 looked like crap after a few yrs with scratches and nicks

 

Its a truck and easily replaced and fairly cheap use it and replace it in a few yrs, thats my plan.

yeah my 2001's tailgate cap has some weird scratches that looked like someone melted it or something... kind of annoying

ditto on don't bother with the HD tailgate cap. If you want true protection you'll need to remove it and have it line-x'd or put something metal on it to protect it.

Pull those caps off the tailgate and look what is underneath and you'll see why you can't spray the top or put a diamond plate cap on it.

I'm not too concerned with the tailgate cap anyways. I was just a little choked because I painted mine white and the inside of it starting getting cut up and black. I used my bed a lot so I expect the abuse now.

its a truck, its not ment to be a trendy fashion piece...mines got scrapes and dings, i'm not loseing any sleep over a piece of plastic
