Speed Limiter

Do the new Silverados have a speed limiter in them?

My 02 Silverado had the V6 engine with the 4 speed automatic and was set at 95. I would have my foot to the floor and it would accelerate to 95, then it would slow down to 90, then speed up to 95, then back down to 90 and on and on....

I was wondering what my 09 Silverado would have because I was talking to a customer at the chevy dealer who has his new camero in for an oil change and he had a V6 in his car and said he got it up to 135 mph.

Any ideas, or stories from you who have put the pedal to the metal?

Supposedly all were set at 97, but my truck would run 105 easily before the tune. The limiter has since been removed.

The tires on the Camaro are probably speed rated for 149 mph.

Here are the tire speed ratings.

L 75 mph 120 km/h Off-Road & Light Truck Tires

M 81 mph 130 km/h

N 87 mph 140km/h Temporary Spare Tires

P 93 mph 150 km/h

Q 99 mph 160 km/h Studless & Studdable Winter Tires

R 106 mph 170 km/h H.D. Light Truck Tires

S 112 mph 180 km/h Family Sedans & Vans

T 118 mph 190 km/h Family Sedans & Vans

U 124 mph 200 km/h

H 130 mph 210 km/h Sport Sedans & Coupes

V 149 mph 240 km/h Sport Sedans, Coupes & Sports Cars

Your vehicle will be speed limited to what ever rating the tire has probably P 93 mph 150 km/h

I don't drive that fast, that is why I was wondering.....I don't get much over 80 mph on the freeway.

I'm not sure what my limiter was on my 06 but I removed it...the reason I see removing the limiter is if I need to go as fast as possible there must be a very good reason, example...the end of the world is here and I gotta get home to the family... willy_nilly.gif

Haha thats the main reason I'd have it removed, just haven't gotten around to it yet!

I was 65miles away from my family as 9/11 happened, i was at work just across the water from the WTC.. i saw the fire, i saw the collapse of the towers. i drove my 94 Grand Prix home bouncing off the limiter (115mph or so) to get home to my wife and 2 little ones, who were already with the rest of my family (we all had relatives working in those buildings, everyone made it except for 1). Speed limiters are the stupidest things in the world...

What if the world was ending? What if my wife and kids were being chased by some maniac? In early 70's my aunt was driving home from work on the BQE (Brooklyn to Staten Island, NY at 2am) when she was pulled over by a car with a red light in the dash. It was some nut impersonating a cop, he tried to get her out of the car, she took off, he chased her PAST 100mph. Thankfully she was driving a '70 formula 400 firebird, she put her foot down and when she looked down the needle was buried, 160mph nut job was dusted (only heard about that story due to comparing that car to my father's Monte SS and was put in my place lol).

My point is WHY put a speed limiter on a vehicle? you can do as much damage at 100 as you can at 140. past the limits for the tires?? This sue-happy society has caused us to have these speed limiters, screw that..

You think they had tires rated for 160mph on that '70 firebird lol... Did she turn into dust?? exactly..

The tire on your vehicle pictured are only rated for around 100 mph and exceeding that speed can and will cause a blowout. There is no reason to go faster safely. Just picture your self driving a truck or SUV at say 120 mph and having a blow out, it wont be pretty when they cart you away in a body bag.
