DamageInc Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 I have a hypothetical question for AFM experts, related to the lifter failures that have occurred. Could those lifters be replaced with standard lifters, and disable the AFM? Would it set DTCs if it was no longer operational and AFM was disabled in the PCM?

nick3941sd Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 thunder racing sells an AFM delete kit but a cheaper and easier way and if your not having any lifter issues would be through a handheld or custom tune like black bear. I just had my truck tunded by BB and had my AFM turned off.
pm26 Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 Just some food for thought: wouldn't it be easier simply not buying an AFM equipped truck in the first place?. You have the 4.8 and 6.2 engine options without the AFM. And if nobody bought AFM trucks, GM would quit making them. I guarantee it. You are perpetuating this abomination by buying it.

Going to be hard to have people buy a 4.8 instead of a 5.3........

It's too late for that now. When I bought the truck, I had no idea how much I would hate the AFM, and was unaware of the lifter issues. And 4.8 was never an option for me, but I wouldn't mind the 6.2. But I agree, it is an abomination.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for. http://www.thunderracing.com/shop-by/categ..._930.html#P7998 So if using that kit and turning off the AFM in the PCM, it won't set any DTCs? I am having noisy lifters, and I'm going to try to get them warrantied, but I'm looking at long-term options if I keep the truck when the warranty is up. I either want the AFM completely gone or I'm trading it in on a 6.2L.

BigBlueLB756 Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 Oh, No!!! I'm going back to "stock" as fast as I can! I lied.

Have you tried finding a 6.2L equipped truck lately???

You have the 4.8 and 6.2 engine options without the AFM. Umm... let's see.... umm... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... No. Wouldn't mind one bit to have a 6.2 for towing, but no way I'd trade my 5.3 for a 4.8. More power, same or better mpg. I'm fine with AFM, but maybe it wouldn't matter so much w/ a 6-spd? Not sure...

Have you tried finding a 6.2L equipped truck lately??? I know that they are not common. I only found a few at large dealerships here in Florida. However, if you look for one, you will find one. Evidently, GM is pushing the AFM 5.3 engines, because this helps them show higher MPG numbers on their trucks on paper and advertise them as "highest mileage full size trucks on the market today".

They could use this mod as an excuse to deny you powertrain warranty if some other issue showed up later. So before you do the mod, check with your GM dealer if the warranty will be affected.
