Rattle Behind The Dash

So my truck just crossed the 5,000 mile threshold, and I have my first minor issue:

 

There's a persistent, fairly loud (at least in my paranoid opinion) rattle coming from behind the driver's side dash, especially at slow speeds and on bumpy roads. It almost sounds like there's something clicking against the glass (plastic?) of one of the tacts, but everything seems to be tight, and the noise seems centered slightly lower. Anyone have something similar happen in their truck? I'm guessing it's a loose wire with a metal clasp or something, but I'd like to have an idea before I go feeling around down there.

 

This thing is driving me crazy. I finally had my peeling tint replaced, so everything else is perfect...well, except for the tiny dent in my bumper from when I was backed into, but the body shop guy said it wouldn't be worth my while to fix.

I had a very similar noise recently in my '05, 5.3. The problem was actually under the hood. The plastic cover on the engine had been removed and not reinstalled correctly. The rear end of the cover had a pinch-type attachment that fits snuggly over the bracket. But, the back end of the cover was just lying on top of the bracket instead. Even though the bolt was tight, the cover was loose at the back and rattle sometimes at idle and certain lower rpms. It's amazing how much of that noise transmitted through the firewall and into the cabin. It sounded like the problem was directly behind the instrument cover. Once that was corrected, no more rattle. Hope this helps.

I had this also. I removed the panel under the steering wheel and added some foam. All of 15 min and rattle is gone

^^X2, but at only 5k why not take it to the dealer and let them fix it under waranty?

Mine has 11K. Much easier for me to fix than have to take a day off and have them tear into it to say could not be duplicated.

There are 2 phillips screws and a 10mm bolt

Several of us folks with the GMT 900 have the mystery rattle in the dash on driver side when it gets cold.

There are several fixes. Try searching in this and the heavy duty.

Mine only rattles when it is cold outside and when it gets warm in the truck it goes away.

Drives me nuts as well.

Drove an entire week and the rattle (only in cold weather) is gone. My hillbilly (pieces of felt) fix worked you would never know its there because its behind the panel

Just a WAG, but, for some strange reason, I bet it's the driver side...

My '10 Sierra has a rattle that comes from the AC vent just to the left of the radio. It only rattles with the AC going and the vent completely open. If I close the vent slightly, the rattle goes away.

Since the noise is based on cold weather I doubt its the ac vent

hmmm, I tried putting a layer of cloth on the metal portions on the inside of the below-steering-wheel panel, but to no avail.

 

I have noticed the noise is much more persistent when the engine is cold in cold weather. It still happens occasionally when it's warmed up, but not nearly as noticeable. Living in San Diego, it's only been "cold" (below 50) in the mornings for the past few weeks...roughly when the noise started.

 

Any particular keywords I should put in the search?

 

If I can't fix it, I'll take it in, but repeating it there would be a crapshoot.
