Blinking Security Light

My wife's Audi has a red security light that flashes on her dash when the alarm is activated. Can something like this be added to my '08 Silverado?

My first reaction was "sure just have an alarm installed" but I'm guessing thats not the route your looking to go. I think there is a orange security light in the gauge cluster. My only idea would be to pull your cluster, isolate that circuit and then wire up a LED to stick somewhere. For that much work I would revert back to my first idea and have an alarm put in.

Don't have the money right now with Christmas just being over and getting ready to buy a house, so I thought in the mean time this might be a temporary solution (Anything to deter a thief).

I found this... http://www.ehow.com/how_4678201_build-fake...larm-light.html

Is there a way that I could wire it up on my truck without draining the battery? There has got to be a way that I can wire this into a fuse (or somewhere else) to where the light would be on when the truck is off or off when the truck is on.

any suggestions?

I had my wheels stolen off my truck at my apartment last month so I might be a little paranoid. When I can afford an alarm I will get one with an inclination sensor and shock sensor added.

Did you have wheel locks on your wheels?

LEDs only draw about 10 mA when they are lit. The author of that article did say which LED was recommended and his solution seemed pretty complicated to me. I think if I was going to do this I would find an unswitched (battery) location on the fuse block or use one of the those add-a-fuse devices. Put the LED where you want it and run the 12V through a little toggle switch to the LED. I would not like a LED that blinks except when I wanted it to and I don't like the idea of getting into the steering wheel cover to wire things to.

Yea, that was the first thing I did when I got the new wheels put on.

That solution seemed pretty complicated to me as well. I figured that wouldn't work for my truck and I too would not want to go into the steering column to wire anything but just thought that if there was something like that that could be done with my truck and taping into a fuse I would do that (Tap into a fuse that will allow the light to be on when the truck is off, and off when the truck is on).

Maybe this is not anywhere close to being possible but it was just running through my head. I get the random thoughts/ideas in my head from time to time. Plus it's an excuse to work on the truck a little.
