Stupid tailgate cables!

The right cable busted on my 99 Silverado!! Has anybody had trouble with their tailgate cables?  I have heard a lot of stories of cables busting.  Has this ever happened to you?  If I put weight on the tailgate the other cable might bust.  Does anybody know what the cost will be for replacement cables?

I have a 2000 and mine havent busted yet, but I have heard its a common problem. Its really a design flaw, see its kinda like taking a coat hanger and bending it back and forth (like open/close tailgate), eventually it breaks

I dont have a part number nor the replacement cost. You could get one from a junkyard from a newer model for cheap I bet.

Keep us posted.

Had one break with an ATV on it. O'Reilly's and Advance Auto Parts has a section with factory look alikes, too.

I wonder if that's my problem.  I can see the clamps underneath the handle move a little bit, but I don't know if they're moving enough to pull the latch open.  When I have the tailgate open, pulling on the handle will move them a small amount but I'm not sure if they're not moving enough to pull the release latch open.  (if any of that made sense)  How do you even get to them?  I'd assume you'd have to take off the bedliner piece and take apart the tailgate, correct?

BOTH of mine broke.

BOTH were replaced under warranty no charge.

Both were not subjected to extra-ordinary load.

In fact....one broke when I closed the tailgate and thought it had latched, it hadn't so when I stepped away the gate fell down....and broke the cable.

Sorry guys....but it should be able to hack that!

Somebody was complaining over on another forum about the cables on his 2001 Silverado.  Seems he climbed up on the tailgate and both of the cables snapped!  The sheetmetal bent itself around the bumper and he crashed to the ground.  Apparently the cables rusted from the inside.

I'm checking my cables every week!!

I don't know why but my cables didn't break but the post on the bed of the truck that they attach to just about pulled out.  I rolled a bale of hay off the back and it stopped on the tailgate for just a second and I pushed a little more and it rolled off, when I when to shut the tailgate it was very hard to shut and I started looking around to see if something was caught in it and I found them bent but not broken.
