What Mileage Should I Switch To Synthetic Oil

Just want some opinions on what milage I should switch to synthetic oil? I have 600 miles on my 2011 5.3 and was going to get an oil change at 1000. On my 08 silverado started the change at 10k. Some say to start right away, what does everyone think? Got my fingers crossed Gm has the oil consumption issue fixed!

You can change any time you want to. Or you can stay with conventional, whatever makes you happy is what you should do. There is no "changing before or after this mileage will ruin your engine" problem here.

Any time is fine. Remember your 2011 requires Dexos 1 approved oil.

if you want to maintain your warranty on a 2011 ... you need to use engine oil that is on the Dexos1 GM approved list ... don't go by what the oil manufacturer says as "dexos-equivalent" or "meets dexos specifications" ... refer to the list of approved oils that is published by GM. So far, the list is pretty short!

Switch anytime, and most of the popular syn oils are dexos compliant, but check first. That said I switched to Pennzoil Platinum at mile 1,3xx with a Wix oil filter. Don't forget about using a good oil filter too. I'd go by the OLM which should let you run 7k between oil changes. Change the oil at 10-15% regardless of mileage or every year.

Guess I might have to switch from synthetic Castrol to Mobil 1. Sounds like Castrol isn't going to cave in to paying GM for Dexos 1 certification.

I actually took a closer look at my earlier posting. Other than Mobil 1, Pennzoil, and Quaker State, I hadn't heard of most of the brands on the list. (I assume the GM Goodwrench oil will be made by either Mobil or Pennzoil.) Anyone know anything about the others? This looks like a game of chicken between GM and the oil companies over licensing rights. Like I said, I'll probably go with Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Platinum, but not because of this. I can't imagine any quality GF-5 oil, Castrol, Valvoline, etc that wouldn't protect and do a great job as well, so if you're brand loyal to one of the non Dexos companies I think you'd be ok. Ultimately, to me it's not worth the hassle to use something not on the list, just in case something bad happened. Both Mobil 1 and Pennzoil Platinum are excellent choices. Also since GM is requiring Dexos for the 2011's I can assume that factory fill is synthetic? If so, I guess we're seeing the last of the, "when can I switch to synthetic?" posts.

I was surprised Castrol wasn't on the list, too. (I must admit I didn't look for Valvoline. ) Then I scrolled down and saw the list has a copyright of 2009.

 

Yeah I think GM is being a little heavyhanded re: selling the license. I wonder if GM does the testing to approve an applicant or just accepts the API rating? (GM claims their requirements are more stringent than API?)
