53k Trans Service @ The Dealer

A pan drop never gets everything out. Only a flush will and I'm not sold on those to be honest.

It all comes down to how much is your time worth.

I paid 18$ for a new filter (NAPA), and I'm not sure how much the oil is I got mine for free (dex6) used just over 4 liters I think, but for it being my first time doing it, it took me 3-4hours, only because I had trouble getting the old seal out. Also it can be quite messy dropping that pan full of oil. In my opinion if you have lots of money pay the fee, but if you enjoy working on your own stuff do that too.

Pan drop and filter change is sufficent, although other people around here swear by the "system flush" which I would never trust at anywhere EXCEPT the dealer, from what I've heard/seen.

Dex VI trans fluid is expensive. Check it out, next time you're at the store.

Could have done a complete system flush for that and at least, gotten all the old fluid out. I wouldn't be

concerned with the filter (non Allison) until 100k.

I was concerned about the cost and whether the service was sufficient. Shop time was $80. I guess I was thinking more like $120 for the whole deal. Truck is going back for a oil leak (plastic plate needs to be changed?), leaky seal on the front axle, and half my speakers not working.

I believe in doing a flush. I have a good shop and they do the BG flush and replace with GM fluid. I'd have to check to tell you the exact price but it's less. Flush is only way to get all the old fluid out. I do the BG trans, brake and radiator/cooling system flushes about every 3 years.

My understanding is that the flush machines reuse the fluid after running it thru a filter system. Anyone know for sure?

Also, most places don't drop the pan and change the filter with a flush.

When I had my dealer do a flush on my 99 way back in around 2002 or so, they botched it up and had oil all over the inside of the hood insulation, behind the core support, in the headlight area, fenderwells, damn near everywhere. They had it for near a week and I had to rent a car as well. Then I saw that when I raised the hood in the service aisle and called them over to see it. They wanted me to leave it again. I told them they'd never see my truck back there for service. I demanded a new insulation blanket for the hood and replaced it myself along with spending hours taking the truck partially apart to clean it all. What a friggin mess. It ended up costing me over $300 with the rental and much more work than if I'd simply dropped the pan, changed the filter and put new fluid in.

Fluid is replaced with fresh stuff in the two machines I've been around.

Talk about a bad experience. But don't blame the flush process. Blame the idiots working the machine. I also doubt all flush machines are equal. BG Flush systems are well known to be quality. But you have to have someone qualified to perform it too.

i pay about 125 for a pan drop....i've been tempted to do a BG flush but at 120k i don't want to puke up the cash to replace the trans if it does go

If your trans is gonna go, it won't be from a flush. I don't know where everyone gets these ideas that tranny services are evil.

Not in any of the many that I have seen.

Most don't but most will have two services. One for just the flush and one for a flush with filter change.

Agreed.

If you had the filter replaced once the flush will not hurt a thing.

What cracks me up is the amount of people that think they are doing any justice by just changing the filter. Do you just change your oil filter and PART of your engine oil during that service? Your trans should be treated no different.

    • I don't wanna do major surgery/upgrades, behind-the-dash work, add amps, change radio etc. on my '26 std cab WT. On the WT, it has the base 7" IOR infotainment setup, and only two speakers (doors). Since I listen to classical, looked around for speakers that do well and dug thru reviews. Two-way speakers were found to be better than 3-way. So I've ordered a pair of  Infinity Reference REF-9632IX 2 way speakers.  [These may  or may not have been discontinued / succeeded by the 3-way ...9633 ones.]    These speakers are lauded for 3 ohm and 94db sensitivity spec so they'll work well for ordinary base car radios without amps and offer better performance (quality,  strength) than  default base paper-cone speakers. They'll be installed in a few days and I'll let y'all know what I think. Bill W San Jose
    • Thanks!   Changed out the rear shocks today to Bilstein 5100s.  So far feel much better. The stock Rancho were wore out.  Lots of heavy hauling (2 moves, home renovations, etc).  Next up is new BFG tires Monday.  Cant wait the current tires have little to no wet traction and are super loud (hum)
    • Ok, I got the all the codes. What do you all think would be a place to start?
    • How about I just point to the factory pans stand pipe little drain plug and claim its a pan with a real drain plug !. I just couldn't swallow the fact that a Dorman pan which at this point is probably the only pan out there that fits the gas version truck cost that much up here in Canada so I decided initially anyway to skip it and see what I thought of pulling the pan method and down the road if I felt inclined enough then I would either install a drain plug kit in the factory pan if there is enough room for it, or have a bung welded onto it, or put an aftermarket pan on. The thing is if the pan is not pulled then the magnets in the pan can't be inspected and cleaned or if wanting to change out the filter. However of course it certainly would make the job easier to be able to drop the oil first before having to handle the pan if dropping the pan that go around was the goal.    I knew a guy locally that was doing custom field spraying years ago with a pickup pulling a ground driven sprayer, I believe it was a GM pickup with an automatic trans. He had a drain plug in his pan and would drop the oil out of it once a week and top it back up through the dipstick tube to keep refreshing a portion of the oil often and that made the transmission last far longer than had he done nothing. Soft fields pulling 500 gallons of water at the start of each mixed up sprayer tank batch and in low range sucking along. I imagine he got some tips from other custom sprayer outfits doing the same thing at the time and learning from their blown up tranny mistakes. Transmissions then had no lock up converter so would cook the crap out of the fluid slipping that much and it would not have been synthetic fluid either.
