Top Speed With My Truck

Recommended Posts

When I had my 02 Silverado with the V6 and automatic, I could put the pedal to the metal and go up to 95mph and then it would slow down to 90, and then race back up to 95 and then back to 90...on and on.....

My 09 with the 5.3 and the 4 speed auto, any idea if they have governors on them like my 02 did?

What could I expect for the top speed?

Does reaching the limits cause any warranty issues?

Yes there is a gov. on it. Seems like it's still 95. Mine has been removed a long time.

No warranty issues for driving up to the factory gov.

They were usually limited to the speed rating of the tires. That way Gm wouldn't be responsible if you drove faster than the tires were rated and you had a blowout.

fastest i had my 07 classic at was about 114 and it got REAL shakey. haha. got a little of the pucker factor and backed it down.

Had my wifes stock '06 Yukon Denali up to 110mph before I let off the gas because I was rapidly approaching slower traffic. I was on 95 south earlier this year when I did it. I don't drive that fast but my cousin said they had a governor and I wanted to see for myself. He's a ford fan and was poking fun. Not sure how fast it would have went but again, I let off because of slower trarffic in the distance. Good thing too, because a few miles further and I passed a police officer sitting in the center median. I don't plan to see how fast my '10 Sierra will go as I don't really care.

a lot had to do with the speed rating of the factory installed tires. some were 96 mph, and some were 106 mph, stock. so the PCM was set accordingly. so if you want to go faster than get a tune, but remember going 110-120 mph on tires rated for 96 mpg can turn ugly real fast.. :uhoh:

I was just wondering. I don't drive that fast and have no need to. I am usually the one in the slow lane poking along trying to stay out of everyone's way. :uhoh:

The speed rating is for sustained speeds, not the one minute runs that most do. When I asked a Bridgestone engineer many years ago, he said sustained speeds were in the range of tens of minutes at worst, and hours at best, depending on air pressures and pavement temps. That being said, the ratings are there for a reason. As others have stated, GM puts speed limits depending the tire ratings, my 00 GTP was set to 126mph, and it would actually do that quite easily.

I have had my truck up to 120, maybe a little more. Only for a few seconds though since tires are only rated to 106.

FYI for those wondering, "Speed ratings are based on laboratory tests where the tire is pressed against a large diameter metal drum to reflect its appropriate load, and run at ever increasing speeds (in 6.2 mph steps in 10 minute increments) until the tire's required speed has been met." (from tire rack) So if you go over your speed rating, while not the smartest thing ever, your tires wont blow immediatly, just don't do it for a long period.

edit: I got beat to the punch! :uhoh:
