Hello,I am new to this forum and I bought a new 2011 GMC Sierra 4X4 5.3 last oct. I was woundering if there is a big advantage in using synthetic oil? If so what brand and weight? Thanks

I use Mobil 1 in my truck. Synthetic holds up better then conventional oil so you can go longer between oil changes. Over time using synthetic there should be less wear on your engine as well.

Did an oil change today. Have run mobil 1 since my truck had 500 miles.

There are some advantages, like in extreme cold synthetic is better and if you live in a hot environment like Phoenix it helps protect better than conventional oil. Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Redline and AMSOIL are you main top brand synthetics.

Just stick to 5w-30. It is what GM recommends.

Anyone making recommendations have any documented proof like Used Oil Analysis to back up their opinions?

I strongly suspect commercials are your primary sources.

Unless you live in an area that has extreme temps hot or cold, or do a lot of heavy hauling/towing, a conventional 5w30 changed at reasonable intervals will serve you just as well as a synthetic. And yes, that is based on a UOA. Welcome to the forum.

I use royal purple. I go about 10k between changes

How does that work with the oil monitor system? or did you just change it at 10k.

Thanks,

the OLM adjusts itself. there was a rather large difference for me when i was using conventional oil and switched to full synthetic.

At 3K miles I am usually at 52-54% on the OLM.

Registed user there since January of 2004 so I might just have a clue. IMO when I see folks pushing M1 in particular in the GM V8s that SCREAMS marketing over research. RP has gotten better ut not worth the price.

Then you have the completely wrong post about the OLM accounting for synthetic vs. dino

Yes, it is based on UOA's. I am not going to do the work for you by finding them and posting them here, but I'll let you help yourself: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php

Then you would be wrong.

Great, then you should know that Mobil posts some great numbers. Just like other oils, however, it can perform just as poorly. Either way, it doesn't mean you should be making condescending posts like you did.

No, it doesn't. Sounds to me as though you're another Mobil 1 basher.

Wow. This is very telling. Do you even actually read anything there? it doesn't appear so, or at the very least you only read what confirms your obvious bias. While RP has a few good UOA's posted there, they have way more horrible UOA's posted there...you should know that. And talk about not worth the price vs. results? RP is the most over-priced, over-hyped, and under-performing oils around.

I'm not "pushing" Mobil 1. I never even mentioned it. I happen to be running it currently to try out the new SN version. Before it, I had Quaker State Ultimate Durability in the sump.
