When Do You Guys Change Your Oil?

I just got a new 2011 3500 work truck and in the past on my 2006 sierra I changed out the factory oil at 500 miles and put Mobil 1 in. I know you dont have to anymore but I guess I'm just old school from listening to my grandfather about new cars and I can't get it out of my head. I was thinking about waiting until 2000 miles to put some synthetic in. What do you guys think? I dont care about money as far as oil changes go, peace of mind with my trucks is more important to me. That's one of a few things I'm obsessive about. I even change out my mobil 1 every 3000 miles and have never gone over by 1 mile. I've never listened to the oil life monitor since it has never showed up on the screen, although I do reset it every time I change the oil.

I use Schaeffers supreme 7000 synthetic blend and change every 5000. Also rotate my tires every 5000. Your gonna get 100 different opionions on this topic. I would do what makes you happy.

I changed my oil on my 2011 at 500 to and used Mobil 1. Then at 1500 changed it again to get any casting out and put redline 5w-30 in. I'm at about 2500 now and i'm gonna run the redline till 5000 and put some fresh stuff in then change it about every 5000 afterwards. I'm like you, i don't really care about the price of the oil id rather have good piece of mind that there is the best oil in there and its clean. I'm sure my schedule is way over kill but hey it makes me feel good, plus i love wrenching on my truck.

When the 3000 "rule" was introduced you had flat tappets and ball pivots in the valvetrain, you had much higher ring tension and you had carburetors polluting the oil with unburned fuel and carbon, not to mention much lower quality oils.

I changed mine at 500 miles on my 2010. Oil was pretty dirty and glad I changed it. I switched to Mobil 1 at this time.

I changed our 2008 Tahoe oil to mobil 1 at like 1K and it looked about the same.

I changed my factory fill out at 500 miles and put Quaker State Ultimate Durability in and then changed again at 3,000 and put Mobil 1 EP in the sump. I will now change every 7,500 miles with the Mobil 1 when I do my tire rotation. Changing Mobil 1 at any less of an interval (especially the EP flavor) is a waste of money and oil.

I too changed my factory fill out at 500 miles and then follow the OLM :troll: It's worked well for the last 4 trucks I've owned and never had an issue with any of them.

change it at 3000 or change it at 10000. Use amsoil or use super tech. Under normal driving conditions your engine will last the same.

I'll second that one. Even conventional oil is good nowadays.

this is a question even the dealers can't get together about. Bought My truck at a dealer in Lockport and they scheduled Me for a checkup at 3000 and an oil change at 6000. At 3000 they just looked at fluid levels/tire pressure/....nothing changed. My Son bought a new truck at another chevy dealer,on My recommendation, and they scheduled Him for every 3000. His oil meter life thingie is still over 50% when He does it. I went to a third dealer for My 12000 mile oil change( went to the third because Heinrich chevy in LOCLPORT NY HOSED ME) and they scheduled Me for a 3000 mile interval. I questioned that and they said imediately, "no problem,we'll schedule it for 6000"

So....what is the answer here. At 6000 I still have oil life to the positive on the meter...My truck runs ok...My Son's lifters make noises in warm weather, intermittently....LOL

AND..a few years ago I was told synthetic oil is great as once using it...it has a life expectancy of 50 to 100 thousand miles and at a change...the filter only is replaced and a new quart of oil is introduced to replace oil lost in the filter. That was why it is economically better to do synthentic in the long run.

It appears that everyone is changing all the oil and filter. Expensive ? and why ?

i change the oil every 3500-4000 miles on all my trucks. just a good habit to get into.

yes....I do the wife's jeep at 3k intervals but this 3k vs 6k thing is wacky....My ford diesel was every 5k and the new ones are 7500(ford diesel) but those are 16 qt capacity.

As long as it's under warranty and done by Chevy...I'm not worried till the warranty expires.
