Linex Box Liner & Putco Rails

Recommended Posts

Ok so I think this was a topic once before but........here goes. Decided to get a Linex spray in box liner for my 2011 Sierra and still waffling about over or under rail spray. After the spray is installed I plan to add chrome Putco bed rails as well.

My truck is the furthest thing from a work truck so I don't really need a huge amount of protection on the rails.

My questions for you all is.........Keeping in mind I will be adding the Putco rails should I go over or under? Which would look better?

I don't know how much protection the Putco ones will offer, but, I have to give a vote for over-the-rails.

Check out my garage (link in my sig) for some over-the-rail pics...

I don't use my truck for work either. BUT, here is a story for you that might add to your pros and cons:

A few weeks ago, I was moving a ping-pong table and as we were putting it into the back of the truck, one of the guys who was holding it let the corner fall and it bounced onto the bed rail. It hit it hard enough that it made me cringe as I felt it go over and heard the hit. After we got it in, I looked at where it hit and no dent, no scratch, nothing... I hate to think of how it would have looked if I hadn't done over-the-rail...

Hope that helps!

Oh, and I did have some aftermarket caps on for a while. They were BAK Procaps. They fit like crap and left scratches/rub marks all over the side of the truck and on the tailgate... If you don't plan on ever taking them off, I suppose it would be fine...

Under the rail, and OEM bed rail caps look the best. I've always gone that route and never been sorry.

I would go with the under rail linex if you plan on putting caps on the bed sides. I have had diamond plate caps from putco on my 2001 and now my 2009 with no problems what so ever. They offer good protection from whatever I have thrown over the rail.

Are you talking about Putco tubular side rails (ie putco lockers, boss, etc) or rail cap covers?

If you're planning on the tubular rails, I'm planning on the same thing. I had Linex over the rail, but my truck is Taupe gray, so the linex doesn't stand out like it would on a silver or white truck.

By the way if you find a good deal on the Putco lockers post a link to where you get them.

Good luck

I did my line-x just to the top of the box, and then had Putcon on my last truck, and the GM ones on my new one. I find not having line-x on the top of the rails looks nicer with the Chrome bed rails on. Both are shiny....

If I wasn't doing the bedrails, I'd probably spray to the top of the box.

Thanks for all the replys. The Putco rails I am adding are the tubular chrome type. I have a friend who owns an auto body shop and he recommends under rail to go with these Putco rails. Most of my friends also agree this would look be a lot cleaner look. Besides with the putcos on I don't think there is too much too worry about as far as ping pong table mishaps etc. Still not sure........

I had the Putco lockers on my 04 Silverado. I really liked how you could use them and their open channels as a place for tie downs when hauling. Good choice in my opinion.

Resurrecting an old thread...

Will the OEM bed rail caps fit on top of Line-X'ed bed rails? I like the idea of continuous protection up and over the rails, but I like the look of the caps.

I did some more internet research after posting this. Some people seem to think that the double sided tape would have a hard time staying on the rough surface of the liner, but no one's tried it and reported back. I've decided to go with liner under the rail and OEM rail caps.
