Extang Solid Fold Cover Leaks

I know a few of you have the Extang Solid fold tonneau cover.

 

I paid a lot of money for this thing and I like the functionality but I'm not real impressed that stuff gets wet in the bed of the truck every time it rains.

 

How many have problems with it leaking in heaving rain? Have you tried to return or exchange it for another one or do they all leak?

Other than water getting in around the tailgate, mine stayed bone dry. I have some damaged seals on the middle pivot point I need to address but before that I could take it through a high pressure carwash and only get some water in by the tailgate.

we used to sell many extang solid folds, then one by one they each came back with broken panels, broken hinges, seals falling off, broken latches, then while dealin with extang on the phone one day and was getting attitude about their crappy product i threw their display into the parking lot and drove over it a few times and send them a picture of it... havn't sold one since

Looks like it's leaking at the seams in two of the panels. I had read some bad reviews on the net before purchasing but thought they were exceptions.

Extang sounds like a company that isn't going to be around for much longer if this is the poor qualtity product they sell. I'm very dissappointed with this purchase.

I sell tons of Extang covers. As a matter a fact we sell about 2-3 trifolds a week and a solid fold about every other. Ive never had any one come back and complain.

 

From what i've seen Extangs customer service is great. Two weeks ago a customer of mine came in with his trifold that was two years old. The cover was coming off the frame in about a 2 inch section it was hardly noticable. I called Extang for him they had him send in his info and the lot number from the cover (cut it off the old tarp), once they recieved it they mailed him a brand new cover.

 

Sucks you guys had issues with their customer service....no complaints from me.

I'm on my second the first being replaced by Extang under warentee, I didn't have any problems with Extangs service. I had two panels the middle and front where the panels began to seperate which I think was partially caused by a leaky seal that let water in in the winter which froze and pushed the panel apart.

 

Now on my new cover I'm suspecting I may again have a very small leak in the mid panel and am no longer under warentee. Nothing has started to seperate so I'm going to run a small beed of good quality sealent around the top of all the panels and cross my fingers for next winter.

 

I too love the cover and it functions great but I'll be extreamly disapointed if it seperates this winter and will be contacting Extang.

I've been looking at the solid cover and it fits my needs. I just have a question. We want all the functions of folding and solid for protection from vandals but no water leaks. Am I missing something? yeah it would suck to have it leak with stuff sitting in the bed but I'm sure these work fine for traveling and it rains while on the road. But to expect it not to leak when its just sitting on there with an empty bed is alot to ask. I'll still end up getting one since I own a truck and for the rare occasion I need to protect it from prying eyes this will work. I'm not expecting it not to leak, thats why its rhino lined. Just want to be informed.

I know this thread is old but for those who are looking today at the Extang Solid Fold I caution you. I have always liked Extang products but this one is not up to the standards I expect from Extang. I bought one new in May 13 and the 1st rain everything in the back of my truck was soaked. Water was coming through the seams and not at the hinge but at the edge of the panel where it joined to what looks like a C-channel. I called them, sent pictures and video and they sent a new one... great service I thought. The new one came damaged, plastic buckle broken that holds it down when folded up, foam on one hinge was cut and a piece was missing and a large gap in the foam the other side hinge... just poor quality. To top that off... it still leaks. Not as bad but it leaks. I called them back and now they won't replace it. Told me it the water was probably running over from the side and they could not guarantee you would not get water in the bed. I know it won't be 100% but I won't put my stuff back there now in fear it will get soaked.

 

I love the simplicity of this cover's operation and installation but it just does not work well in the rain. Who knows what will happen this winter. If you are buying this to keep your bed dry you will likely be disappointed and Extang does not care. They will send you parts all day long but this cover I believe has design flaws and parts won't fix it. This cover needs to be removed from the market.

 

I am not the only recent person I know who has problems. After talking to some poeple about this issue I found someone else who has one less than a year old and it leaks too.

 

Stay clear of this cover for your own good.

My Extang Solid fold is missing some foam "gaskets" after a few years of use, but I expected that since foam doesn't last forever. I haven't tried contacting them yet about replacement foam. I take it on and off a lot.

Sorry some of you guys have had issues with the cover. Mine is still on my 08 since shortly after I got the truck in the fall of 07 and it serves me well.

I only see very little water trails that came in thru the tailgate went it rain heavly. I've had mine since jan 2013 and it too serves me well. The lockng tab bols have rusted but I'm too lazy to hive them a call. But you should give them a call and they should take care of you.

I have been in touch with Extang and got all the new seals I needed quite some time ago- it was just a matter of having time, I travel most weeks for work and generally don't have time/motivation to deal with things like this while on the road.

I love everything about my new solid fold except for the leaks. Understand the blowers at the carwash sriving it under the seals but it also leaks just from rain.

I bought some super glue "gel" that is supposed to be water resistant. Ran a bead around the panels against the edge and no more leaking so far.

I purchased my first Extang Solid Fold in May 2014 and had it installed on my 2014 Sierra SLT. In June I contacted customer service and they replaced it due to leaks. I had the new one installed in July 2014 , went on vacation and it leaked, I mean really leaked. I sent a email to their customer service and await an answer. Has anyone been able to upgrade to a better folding top thru Extang for an additional cost or negotiate a return and refund. I like the appearance of the top but the leak is unacceptable.

 

I have seen a top that rolls up against the cab in a kind of self storage box, has anyone had success with these?

      Sad thing is that this doesn't have to be the case. LSPI can be solved without a reduction in TBN. Swap Ca for Mg.  Cats are not a issue if the OEM can get a ring and valve guide seal even at SN levels of SAPS. Dizzy is purring like a kitten with a bowl of warm milk. 200K of Full SAPS oil and zero detonation issues and nice a clean inside and out. This shouldn't be an issue. It isn't 1920.    Tell ya what AMSOIL SS is excellent at, internal cleanliness. The new formula is even a step up from their already outstanding cleanliness levels. Can't say the OEM offering is quite that clean. There marketing suggest the SS is cleaner.     That is the only defense with at shelf oil. Nothing wrong with them if you ignore the marketing and OEM 'recommended' OCI and use a thimble full of common sense. 😉 You go sir.

      I started with a folding cover by BAK PAC on my 2500. It went bad after close to 5 years. Bent and vinyl coming loose. Contacted BAK and they gave me a very good discount on a Revolver. Had it a number of years. Mostly outdoor storage. Some garage storage. Vinyl started to come loose. Still under warranty so they replaced to cover. Sold the 2500, bought the 1500 and got another revolver for it. Had it a couple years now and no issues. I store it indoors. Got a bit of discount when buying it as well. If you are seeing problems, contact BAK or real truck and let them know. Customer service was pretty good. But I think they changed their warranty.

      I agree, there is no one answer fits all as every rig is different, one may be pulling some little aluminum fishing boat while another is towing a monstrosity that weighs a lot and hopefully the owner if the rig has some prior experience to know what drive mode they should choose.    It also struck me and this is from watching a few of those boat ramp escapades videos in the past, Ford being one of the vehicles that has the auto front axle hubs and sure enough its found out that one hub has crapped out and won't engage and may not have manual hubs to even select on both sides so they are on the boat ramp stuck with no four wheel drive and spinning .... they flat out need a tow to get up the ramp and deal with the vehicles new found issues. That can happen to all brands of pickup, finding out either four wheel drive or 4 low isn't working right at the time its needed it to work as some electronic crap has failed.

      Its possible you never had the joy of the crappy boat launches we tend to have around here or really some of them are just grades down to the river if its a river scenario and the conditions change all the time with the river levels and silt deposits. Some of the lakes we went to years ago, there was no such thing as a cement pad that went down into the water that the trailer stayed on, it was gravel maybe up to the water line and then duck crap much beyond that so sinking the boat tires into mud. Of course some of the more established lakes had a cement bar type boat ramp but sometimes it was covered in green slime closer and certainly within the water and a two wheel drive had all sorts of fun if one had to touch that slime with the rear tires.    A neighbor of mine had made a comment years back with his chev truck that was probably about the same year as yours but a half ton extended cab 4x4 and he a a fiberglass boat with an inboard so it wasn't a feather weight and he had gone out to one of the large popular lakes in the area and don't ask me how this happened but he was in two wheel drive as he figured he didn't require four wheel drive for that boat ramp and somehow upon pulling the boat out he twisted one of his drive axles. I suspect it must have spun and then grabbed on the cement ramp and shocked it to the degree of twisting it. He would have had the standard 8.5 or whatever it was axle housing as the 9.5 ring gear like my truck has also has larger drive axles as far as I know. Anyway he was feeling a vibration driving home and had it checked out and a shop found that the tire/hub was wobbling because of the axle had twisted so in went a new drive axle. After that bad experience he said he made sure to put it into four wheel drive to lower the stress on the rear axle. Of course that is where an HD truck can handle a lot more stress and no doubt these newer half tons with their larger ring gears probably have larger drive axles as well to match vs back in the day.

      Desirable - as in does someone WANT one, aspire to have one. Could reasonably buy any car they want and CHOOSE these instead.    I didn't watch the video, why did they win?
