Longer Oil Filter For 2007 And Up

Recommended Posts

I am interested in finding a longer oil filter, more filter area, for my 2008 6.0L engine. It seems that there has been a lot of interest in the AC Delco PF63, which appears to be a longer PF48. If you look around on the internet the PF63 has the same mounting size, and is used in some GM applications as an interchange for the PF48. It is said that it also has the same by-pass valve setting, and also has a anti-drain back valve required. Some of the cross reference numbers for other manufactures are; Purolator L22500, Wix 57045, Fram G10575, and the Mobil 1 M1-212. Can someone out there confirm that these numbers are correct, and can be used on our trucks?

Thanks,

Just curious, why would you want a longer filter? These trucks come from the factory with the proper filter that is designed to be used with these engines. Is there a performance reason that a longer filter would be better?

I would just like more filtering area, if it means just changing to a longer filter. I have also run Mobil 1 since it was new, and change it more often than what is required by the manufacture. Just because GM designed this truck without being able to lube the ball joints, it doesn't make it right. I have always tried to service my trucks more oftem that what is required, and have always had very good luck with them. Now that I am retired, I travel a lot pulling an Airstream trailer all over the US, and some of it is in hot weather pulling hills. Some people just try to get as much from there trucks as they can without any additional care. Those are the ones parked along the interstate with fluid running out of them. Pay me now, or pay them later.

Longer filter = more filter area + a slightly larger oil capacity. While it's a not a huge difference, every little bit helps

You've answered your question.

The PF48 and PF63 have the exact same media in the filter, the PF63 is only longer. Nothing to gain by this expect it may hold a little more oil then the correct filter. Before running it, I would check the burst strength and make sure it will be ok for your truck. This filter is being used on the 2011 v-6 Traverse and Acadia. It's your truck, do what you want with it.

While the 48 and 63 may in fact fit, they have different specifications that may or may not be suitable for a engine its not recommended for.

Instead of something longer you should be looking for a filter with better filtering media.

And also remember if you are under warranty and you use a filter not specified for your application and is not listed in the catalog for your truck and you have a filter failure and screw up your engine, the warranty will not cover it.

^^ what he said - why take the chance?

i've always run the longer filter on my fbodies...

i also would like a longer filter on the truck - if nothing else perhaps i'd be able to get a little more of my fingers on the filter to actually make it easier to remove during oil changes. there's no reason this filter should be hidden way up there like that... :stupiddesigners:

I already have well over 100,000 miles on my 2008 truck, so I don't think GM will care, but I will. As for the media being the same in both, I am going to buy one of each and cut them apart to see what is inside. It won't be the first time I was disappointed in what I have found in an oil filter, just cut open a Fram and see what you think with their cardboard ends and bent steel for a spring. I have a total of three vehicles with this engine, 2007 GMC truck, 2008 GMC truck, and a 2007 GMC Yukon. It is worth it to me to see what I am putting on them. I normally use a WIX, NAPA, which are made in Gastonia North Carolina, or Purolator filter when I change my oil, all of which I have cut apart. Thanks for all that have taken your time to answered my request for information, it all helps.

Why not mount an oil filter bypass setup, then you can put whatever size/type filter on it you wish. Even can mount dual filters.

what about ground clearance???

the stock filter is flush with the oil pan which i believe is the lowest point in the front end.

upgrade to a Mobil 1 M1-113 filter!

The synthetic fibers in Mobil 1 Extended Performance Oil Filters yield the following key benefits:

A much more efficient filter, removing more particles per pass through the filter than conventional filter media.

Less resistance to oil flow, reducing the potential for the filter to restrict the flow of oil to your engine.

A larger surface area to trap more contaminant particles, allowing the longer service intervals.
