Specific ATF for specific years...?

Got a 2006 sierra. Is it a big deal to use the specific ATF for the specific year of the truck or just use any generic ATF? Whats the big difference between all these fluids? Just the price or more?

Are you talking brand or type? Like Dex III vs Dex VI? You're truck uses Dex VI, that's what you replace it with. If you had a vehicle that originally used Dex III then you can still find it in several brands on the shelf, or you could use Dex VI, which is backwards compatible with older fluids.

But any quality ATF that state it meets or exceeds the set standards. Wal Mart's brand is on the approved Dex VI list

Thanks for the quick reply! I did the tranny flush using the dex VI oil, i was just wondering if the transmission could really tell the difference between the dex 3 & 6. Have you ever done a flush on an 06? Those 2 torx bolts holding the shift cable bracket are a real @!#$!

On transmission that was sent from the factory with Dex VI, that's what you need to go back with. Dex III isn't forward compatible.

Yep those torx screws can sometimes be a bear.
