trucks front wheels shaking

my mom has an 85 chevy 6.2 litre sub sat for a few years before she gave it to me.i fixed it up an gave it back but it shakes dramatically when i apply the brakes.the front tires wobble left to right it almost wrecks it.my girlfriends 03 lexus does it too but not that bad..they're rackin their brain trying to figure out just what the hell is wrong with it but i cant think of anything but the brakes need to be bled or a faulty caliper.i took the left pads off and changed the barkes an the right ones were insanely more worn than the left leading me to think its the caliper but im not sure warped rotors maybe?..anyone have experience with this issue???

How is it possible everytime you create a thread you make multiple posts?

You can start by jacking the vehicle up and checking for play in the steering and ball joints, if there is none chances are it is a bad rotor. It could also be an unbalanced tire but it would shake at speed then as well not just under braking. If it is a bad rotor the reason is usually over heating caused by either a sticking caliper or the way the vehicle is driven.

Yee start with the easy stuff 1st, lugnuts, check tires and there psi. Then maybe a peek at the brakes. After that take it some were maybe its just bad alinement

Alignment will not cause a tire wobble, my guess would be warped rotors

if the rotor is moving the wheels it must look like a pototo chip!. I thought bad toe angle of the wheels can cause this? Anyways, if everythig is tight i still suggest taking it to a pro

if they were toed in ot out the tires would just wear on the inside or outside..its getting pretty bad it broke the leaf spring bracket i fixed that but it still shakes..i cant really determine if the rotors are warped..i was thinking today maybe the stabilizer?

Cupped tires due to an out-of-line front end?

Posted

You can check the rotors very easily. Take a coat hanger, open it up, attach one end to something solid in the front end, take the other end and bend it so it is just off the outside face of the rotor, with the end pointing right at the rotor face, and turn the rotor slowly. Look to see if the gap between the wire and the rotor changes. Generally anything under .006 of an inch is ok. Also look at the shiney face of the rotor for blue spots, or for spots that look like blisters. Check the inside face as well.

If it only occurs under braking, and you can feel the brake pedal pulsing as well, it will be the rotors. It will not be the alignment. It will not be tire balance. It will not be cupped tires (if you feel the pedal pulsing).

Your rotors are warped. Warped rotors cause the exact issue you are describing.

If it were bad toe angle, it would do it at speed not just while applying the brakes because the toe angle doesn't change when you press the brake pedal. You would also notice the tire wear if it's as bad as you say.

Having one side brake being worn is not unusual, they don't always wear evenly. My guess is the warped rotor is contacting the brake pad a little bit even when you don't have the brakes applied causing uneven wear on the right side.. Pull the tire and put a ruler or any type of straight edge on the rotor. You will find how bad it's warped that way.

Can you feel it i nthe steering wheel? When is the last time the rotors were replaced, on both vehicles?
