i am thinking of getting a 2006 silverado that is to take E85. Will regular unleaded gas work without hurting anything?

Thanks for input.

Yes you can run either

I don't have one, and Ryan is right. However, IIRC, there is a specific "way" to drive after you change from one fuel type to another. I don't want to muddy the waters with what I remember, but just follow the manual's instructions.

I could be wrong but didn't the flex fuel trucks not start until 2007 with the GMT900 platform?

Nope. I know quite a few people with 2005 flexfuel trucks (they dont have badges on them)

I'm one of them, well 2006 anyway. Flexfuel has been around in the GM trucks since around 2003? My truck didn't even get the yellow cap but it's got the sticker on the fuel door, RPO code of L59 in my glovebox, and the "Z" for an eighth digit in my VIN.

I have one and have NO problem burning E-85! Just a bitch finding it and the mpg will drop by 5.....so dont even bother. IMO

Ok, thanks. Never a day goes by that you can't learn something new!

Mines Flex as well, I've never run E85 and never will. Know lots of people that have, they all said 25% loss of efficiency.

Anyone know what the actual mechanical differences are between flex and non flex?

Posted

This is only what I know of for the differences:

Fuel pump

Larger Injectors

Fuel lines/tank (not positive if that's fact)

Spark Plugs (not positive on this one either)

Additional programming in PCM

Additional sensors to read when different fuel is in tank

In our older generation truck (GMT800), the flex fuel engines were cast iron blocks, (GMT900s can be aluminum)

Also I think the exhaust was different (material wise), but I could WAY off base on that.

The engines itself isn't mechanically different from the non flex version, just the difference of what some components were made out of.

Any pro's to confirm/correct me?

I like running E85, the truck is much much more responsive. I don't mind the lower MPG but I do mind the horrid range I get on it (and yes I realize low MPG=reduced range). Highway trips suck, it seems like I'm always stopping to fill up even on normal gas, E85 is waaaay worse.

Am I the only one confused with this? Low range, horrid mileage, need to fill up every stop. WTF would you want to burn it for? Especially since the price isn't that much better? (I doubt it's 25% cheaper to compensate for the mileage loss).

Filling up your truck is like brushing your teeth, or taking a dump. Just things that get in the way of better things you could be doing.

Truck runs better and it's made with less oil so less money goes back to the middle east. Growing corn for ethanol is a slippery political slope so all I'll say is I'd rather my money go to a grower here in America than some country that wants to force their stone age lifestyle on all of us.

What's better than taking a dump?
