I finally got around to washing her although only the wheels/tires were done by hand. I then treated the trim/taillights to McGuires back to black, and cleaned the interior from top to bottom.

Low beams are whiter than I remembered! I'm pleased.

Amazing how long vehicles last without road salt or constant humidity. Thing still looks mint!

 

Most of that generation up here has already been sent to the crusher ... or is on it's way there.

I don't have health insurance right now lol its always in the back of my mind something could happen but I always keep that confidence out there. Getting scared can mess you up.

Out here in Arizona you still see tons of gmt800's running around. Some in better shape than others as long as they have been cared for, negligence is usually the biggest factor.

Oh yeah I remember - I spent 2 years in Phoenix off 19th & Northern. I was AMAZED at the cars I was seeing still on the road with the original paint! Saw 60 year old cars rolling around all the time. Saw a bunch of early 70's Japanese cars that have all but vanished from this part of the country still driving around out there, unrestored.

 

I bought my '72 El Camino out there. Had a little rust behind the wheels, and under the rear glass was the worst of it. Nothing a little silicone caulk didn't fix. Thing was a dream to work on. Everything always came right out, with no penetrating fluid, or fire-wrench needed. :)

 

Rubber, batteries, and electronic components seem to be the only casualties of the heat out there.

Yup, rubber degrades very quickly out here. Windshield wiper blades don't get used excessively but they go bad very fast. And fortunately we haven't had problems with batteries, not even the cheapo Duralasts from autozone!

 

And as long as a car sees a decent amount of shade in the day time the paint will be in great condition.

As far as batteries go, I meant compared to us up here. When I started having issues with my CBR600F2's battery, one of my instructors asked how old it was. Told him OEM - this was in 2000 and the bike was a '94. I was pissed I got shorted 2 years on that battery ... but when I told him that, he was amazed, and started telling everyone how old my battery was, LOL! I thought that was funny. He said 3 years was average down there back then. I figured with the way companies cheap out on stuff, it would be even less than that today.

 

With help from my good chargers, I normally see anywhere from 8-12 years out of batteries in cars, motorcycles, & lawn equipment up here in MA.

8-12 years?! I think we've averaged around 4-5, and I thought that was a good run. lol

The heat really shortens their life. That's why I try to debunk the myth that seems to never die up here in the Northeast, that you have to, or should, bring all your batteries inside where it's warm to be charged for the winter. If you leave them out in the cold and keep them charged, they will last longer. The colder they are, the less they self-discharge.

 

I remember a guy at Sears telling me when I bought a Diehard battery out there, that in Phoenix it had a different part number, and was heavier, due to being a "hot climate" battery. Had thicker plates inside to help longevity I guess. That battery I got 12 years out of since it only spent 1.5 years out there, and ended up here in MA with the El Camino. It sat in the dirt in my barn neglected for a few years too, and was still good!

Drove myself and 2 buddies to Port Canaveral and went fishing at Jetty Park Pier. Another nice night like it was last weekend when we went to Sebastian Inlet. Had a brisk wind all night/early morning. We had the entire pier to ourselves. Apparently there's a tropical storm over Florida right now, might explain the empty pier and why we only caught a couple small sharks and other fish.

 

About to head out to the range and pull some RSO duty. I wonder how flooded it is out there, might leave early if I get tired of sitting out in the rain, or if I think the beast is going to just sink and get stuck if I go off our little road anywhere.

    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
