With cell phone deals I dont even know why people get land phones.

Child + emergency = 911. A land-line pinpoints their location precisely and immediately.

Pretty expensive for that . One of the first things you teach a kid is the address of your house and phone number. Kids learn amazlying fast and those two simple things they can learn in like a hour . Kids can learn two langues, everything in school, how to read, and almost everyday they are learning somthing new . A simple adress and phone number for a kid is no problem . Land phones to day in my opion are just a waste of money .

The nice thing about a land line is it's always in the same place. If a kid is home and needs to call for help they know exactly where to go.

Great, NOW I'm going to be all worried and such...thanks a lot Danny. lol

My kids seem to always find my phone before I can so I think I'm pretty safe. My daughter has even figured out how to use it...even when I had the screen password protected...little brat. lol

Haha sorry, my mom was always paranoid, when I'd ask her why we still had a landline, she would tell me... Many times lol

Another reason we kept one was that our power could get knocked out sometimes, and if the cell phones ran out of juice, we could use the landline.

Do land lines work with no power ? Pretty sure you have to plug a phone in to get it power runs off electricity .

I can't speak for laws in Canada but even with no service subscription, a landline phone must be able to dial 911. Even if you have no account or you owe them a million bucks, it has to dial 911.

A basic corded phone is powered by the phone line, a cordless will need regular power usually though my home phone setup has a battery backup.

I miss the old land line phones that worked no matter what. But switched to Vonage on '04(to cut bill in half) & am looking to cut that out if cell service improves just a bit.

To the op, you can turn texting OFF at what ever company you sign up with & go with minimal data packages.

That being said, I have a Galaxy S3 & both the battery/call quality are excellent. The only thing I use it for is to tether my laptop online when I am on the road away from home. The rest of it is absolutely useless to me & would go back to a flip phone if possible.

I got a landline and forward my cell to it when I'm at home, I had a cell phone that would randomly go to voicemail sometimes even with full reception. One day I woke up and missed an overtime call because of it. Landline costs like 2% a month or 24% a year or something like that of that ONE missed overtime call. Not a waste of money at all. Plus if the power goes out which happens around here during the fall months once in awhile, I can still make calls and recieve calls (overtime$) if my phone dies.

I pay less for a basic land line than Verizon wants for one flip phone on their new plans. Land lines are self-powered (48V)... 110V plug not required. IP phones aren't a bad option, but require maintenance (battery backup). As for voice quality, I can barely understand folks on cell phones sometimes.

When I'm home, my cell stays in my office (I'm not going to carry it around with me). The land line has extensions that I can hear all over the house, it's just more convenient to have a land line when I'm home. Plus, when I get a call and I'm watching TV, caller ID shows up on the screen. I have, however, been seriously thinking of going VOIP with an Ooma.

I've been looking at that one too. Sounds promising.

Can't believe people think 200 a month is expensive for 3 phones lol. I pay 250 a month for 2 iPhones, sometimes more.

IMO this is 2012, I carry my work phone and my iPhone at all times. I use it constantly, like right now sitting in the airport going home. I used to carry a laptop, now I carry my phone. It's all I need, I barely go on my computer(s) anymore. Why would I? My phone almost does everything I need on a day to day basis...

Ill add I am old enough to remember the days with no cell phones, I remember my dad got one. One of them huge Motorola things with big ass battery, then he had a " 3 watt bag phone" in his truck ahah...my first phone was when I was 18, it was a Nokia LOL...

I got my first one at 16, my parents wanted me to have it cause I went to school a good ways from home. So I got the phone but had to pay for the service. Been with Verizon most of that time, save a few years on Nextel, which used to have great service. I bought my phone under the town employee contract (even though I was paying for everything myself) and got a special support number that a real person answered- every time! But they went downhill fast after the Sprint merger.
