Oil change - this normal?

Recommended Posts

Ok changing oil tonight and noticed "condensation" on the oil pan. Spot just above the black bracing. The oil drip is normal as I am draining the pan.

Any thoughts? Haven't noticed this before

I can't say that I've seen it before. But I can believe if conditions were just right it could happen. Warm, but not too warm pan. Cool, moist air. No moisture on anything else under there?

Nope, today is slightly warmer 50's and did get cooler tonight. Rear diff looks similar with a dark area. I will post pics later

That would be one hell of a leak and the dip stick showed no oil usage.

Is it water? Odd for it to be happening. Mostly for condensation you need the oil pan to be cooler than the outside air, just like on a glass of ice water.

I take it you drove it before you pulled the oil plug to get the oil up to temp? Otherwise if the oil in the pan and rear diff got cold over night and then it warmed up, the fluid would be colder inside there and the warmer air with moisture would be condensing on them.

Yes, when I parked the truck it got down to about 45. I started the truck and let it run about 10 min to get up to temp then changed the oil.
