How do you cope?

Are you doing the job you always thought you would be?

I seem to be having a bad run of jobs the last few years, and I am wondering how others "conform" to something they hate.

Depends on the job I suppose, or why you hate it. The job I'm doing now involves me being away from home for weeks at a time. I've been out here since Jan 3rd basically. Paid every day. So I hate being gone, but the benefits of it are great, so I look at it positively, instead of negatively.

I worked rigs for 6 years. Liked it most of the time, but there were also some miserable bloody shifts. Especially with a -45 windchill. So from that, I branched out. Used that experience to acquire a better job in the field. I'm sitting here watching them work in a blizzard through my window now.

So it could be worse, I could still be out there haha.

I suggest making a change if you hate your job, or try to enjoy life in your downtime.

I've been getting pretty depressed, working my life away. So I decided I need a change. I'm going to start traveling. Booked a flight to the Philippines on March 27th, going backpacking for 3 weeks.

If you let yourself get consumed by something you hate, you are going to have a miserable life.

I don't mind my job, but I don't care for almost anyone I work with. I just try to stay away from everyone as much as possible. My job itself it pretty easy. I'm a CNC Machinist.

I can say that for the most part my profession has been good, but like others have said, if its that bad consider three things:

1. Life is short, so don't waste your time with a bad situation and bad people if you don't have to.

2. If others are depending on you, you have to suck it up and drive on.

3. You gotta earn your bones, sometimes you have to do things you don't like to gain the wisdom and respect from others that youth does not offer.

Also since I am not carrying a 100lbs Ruck, 40lbs of body armor, its not 100 degrees, and not getting shot at, lifes not bad.

I was laid off from a good job at a bad company a few months ago. But I got good severance package, and found a new job a month ago, paying 30% more money. More than I have ever made or likely ever will again (around $60,000/yr). I hate it. It is the worst place to be that I have ever been bar none. I am struggling every day to not quit. Don't know how long I can last. There's more to life than money.

Looking at the real world unemployment levels should help some...

See U6 http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t15.htm

That being said, I worked at a farm retail outlet for 11 years. I was as high as I could go until my manager who had a 21% ownership stake would retire. At the time that looked to be another 10 years. Additionally, our parent co was bought out, the totem pole suddenly got taller with more people already in line to move up & I was burned out.

Started my own business doing auto transport. Mistake, should have stayed put & made the best of it.

This was back fall 2006 & made the move out on my own March 2007. I knew the economy was going to have a issue, but had no idea what was about to happen. Still working on getting a good standing in the business, but plenty worried what is going to happen with this artificial economy right now.

Staying put back in the day would have forced seeking more education to improve my standing in the company & may have changed the outlook of the job. All speculation now, but may be a option for you?

I don't mind my job, but I was having difficulty living off my wage. I made serious improvement over the last 2 years, our raises are evaluated yearly and last year I got a $0.90 raise. This year, after finishing my first year of apprenticeship I told myself if I didn't get a $3 raise I was going to find work elsewhere. I cursed and grumbled about it to myself, (Im not one to complain openly) and I had my evaluation with my manager 2 days ago. To my surprise, I was met with a $6 raise. I look forward to more years with this company. :)

Hopefully y'all find good employers that recognize commitment and determination. Hard work and devotion make a person valuable, and no one should have to struggle to live and pay bills.

Hello! I have been a mechanic, mostly heavy truck, for over 40 years and I can say it has been a good job except for the recognition.

My job has put two children through college, one at WSU the other at Central Washington University, without any loans and a mother that is a stay at home mom.

I have a real problem with the phrase "single parent family" how about the "single income family"?

With two hands that are pretty much worse for wear and a body that is about worn out, I can tell you that it is not always easy, but is nice to know that your children are not going to be a burden to society.

A'm I proud of my girls? YOU BET!!!

Props mike! I'm in my 2nd year as an apprentice HD truck=+trans tech, working at a Pete dealer! besides the politics and other issues associated with any job, Its good! I've been pulling wrenches for 3 years as a job, and have had plenty of experience at home. I'm really getting into the more technical electronics side of things now so its helping me move forward within the dealer. Starting to really pay off!

I'm hoping when I get my journeyman ticket I will be able to let my wife stay home. we both are working hard to achieve it.

I seem to be having a bad run of jobs the last few years, and I am wondering how others "conform" to something they hate.

I should start with the fact that I don't hate my job, just a few aspects of it. As for the job that I always thought that I'd be doing, I was too short sighted to ever look that far ahead. When I finally got my sh!t together at about 25 years old I tried several gigs. The money was great in sales, but the travel and the tie kinda pushed me out of that world. Business ownership was good and it was fun to work with the wife but she got sick and I got spread too thin. Fast forward to today and I'm a 47 year old dock worker. My dream job? Yeah, right. It's cold in the winter, hot in the summer and the recognition is almost nonexistent. Those things being said, the pay is very good, my co-workers are for the most part pretty cool, the benefits are good and the 401K is growing. As for how I conform, I raise a beautiful daughter with straight "A's" who keeps me not only motivated but focused on what really matters. My time to make a difference in the world through my career has passed, my ability to make a difference through my actions and the child that I raise has not.

I've also found that another way to cope is to put a bada$$ truck in the driveway that you can't quite afford. You tend to work harder and let the little things bother you less when you've got some upgrades in mind and the drive to work is such a freakin' blast. I also look at it this way, if work was supposed to be fun, would they have to pay you to do it?

I enjoy my job, but I'm putting in too many hours that's taking time away from things I'd like to be doing. For me in my job, it's all in my control; however, the problem is not having the qualified people to delegate key responsibilities. Due to personality conflicts and a lack of trust between myself and one of my subbordinate supervisors, the only real problem in my job also happens to be the worst part of it all. I know there are options to be able to do my job elsewhere; however, I know the odds are there will be at least one person or thing that will create grief. The trick for me is recognizing all of the positive aspects of my job, and all of the other people that help make it that way. I love a challenge, and this place gives me many.

The grass isn't always greener on the other side, but it doesn't hurt to peek over the fence to see for yourself before climbing over. Options are almost always available. Networking and even interviewing employers gets the best results. It's all about getting information on the things that are important to you in a job. The most difficult thing to get any information in advance is the people you'd work with. Personalities are always different. The key is being able to work among varying personalities.

Who do you work for ShadowGM?

Right now I am making $15 an hour as a service technician for a local tool store that has it's own repair shop. It's a pretty crummy job, and I work with some less than desirable people. The only thing keeping me from walking is I have no back-up plan, and I have no money saved up. Paying the bills is better than charging them to a credit card, only to have to pay them later.

I was a long haul trucker for years, but decided to call it quits when I met my wife to be. Home time is the most important thing to me now. I am currently 25 years of age, and I need to figure out something soon. Nowadays with corporate greed, it seems job security and long term careers are a thing of the past.
