Tranny over heating while towing

I wonder if the seals and gaskets are going bad in your fluid pump? How many miles do you have on your tranny?

82572mi. last year I have the torque converter replaced at about 75,000 miles.

 

now with the new cooler I can actually watch the temp drop at idle.

Everything should be good then. I mean, its in the operating temp. range

 

And that's a great feeling when you see it drop 20-30 degrees

so I have an hour drive home and its been about half that and I've been staying at 200 degrees so far I don't get itwell usually before I change the cooler it stayed at 225 and really I'm at 195 so I still and down 30 degrees

The only time I've seen 200 since the new cooler is in heavy stop and go traffic

I haven't towed in 90+ degree heat with this cooler yet, but I've seen 180 in 75-80 degree weather. What kind of fluid are you using? That could make a difference too

yeah it's when I'm in stop and go is when its at 200 right now I'm cruisin and it stays at a steady 180 I'm lookingin the book and it said normal operating temperature is between 180 and 200 should be good and like I said I'm down a court so that might help too

 

do you think of a larger tranny pan will make a difference or is it not necessary now

Everyone here will probably recommend Mobile 1 or Amsoil tranny fluid. Or royal purple. I'm a cheap @$$ when it comes to tranny fluid (and I shouldn't be) so I use Valvoline High Mileage. Ive been happy with the temps. so far, but I'm sure I could see better with a bit higher quality of a fluid. As for a deep pan, if you do install one, make sure it is not a chrome pan. Chrome holds heat and takes a while to cool down, which is why I will not install one on my rear end or for a tranny pan. I heard Mag-Hytec makes a good differential cover that is suppose to disipate heat as well as hold two extra quarts of differential fluid, so I'm guessing their tranny pan should be of the same quality. But you will pay close to $300 for that pan. I cannot vouch for their products, I'm just basing it off the internet reviews. I'm sure others will chime in on the quality of the Mag-Hytec products, those with hands on experience

I just had to pull over because it went to 225 too much traffic.

 

I hear a lot about amsoil too. I put all purple in engine, both difs. But it was getting to expensive so i just put mobil synthetic

Royal purple is really expensive. Definitely not worth it for an oil change, but for the diffs. and trans. fluid it is probably worth it, if you tow a lot.

 

And I think at 225, the fluid can start to break down if it gets there often.

 

How much weight are you towing? Since you tow frequently, I would think you should change out your trans. and differential fluids at 20k miles instead of 30k. But that's my suggestion. To each their own

it's no more than 5,000 pounds and I'm definitely do for the transmission and the diffs it's been well over 25,000 miles

Look into a pan that will hold 2-3 more quarts of fluid. That should drop your temps. even more

 

And 5,000 lbs. on a 2500 should not be a problem at all. Like I have said before, my temps. in my truck usually never go more than 100 degrees above ambient while towing, and are usually 80 above ambient while not towing. Maybe your fluid has broken down too much, which is why you keep seeing those numbers. A flush and fill would probably be a good idea.

 

225 is really high, even in 90 degree heat. Not sure what's going on. Do you drive it hard, and give no mercy on the truck? Haha

I put a Derale pan on mine and it holds a couple more quarts, so far my trans has not gone over 175 in my unloaded stop in go Wash DC traffic. When I am just rolling along it stays around 150.

I do drive it hard...lol Ya I think its the fluid as well, its been too long. It was done last year some time and I plowed this season too. Its hurtin'!. While Im at it Ill put that new cover on it as well.

 

But like you said , I think the truck should be able to handle it.
