Tranny over heating while towing

finally got it..

 

the two brackets on the top I found in the garage and they fit perfectly! bottom two I fabed from stick of aluminum.

I just had to pull over because it went to 225 too much traffic.

 

I hear a lot about amsoil too. I put all purple in engine, both difs. But it was getting to expensive so i just put mobil synthetic

 

 

The new Dexron fluid starts to degrade at 270 degrees. At 225 your still OK. OR, if your DIC gives you a message that your tranny fluid is too hot..

I put a Derale pan on mine and it holds a couple more quarts, so far my trans has not gone over 175 in my unloaded stop in go Wash DC traffic. When I am just rolling along it stays around 150.

Oh gosh don't mention DC traffic. I go up there frequently for work, and I hate trying to make it in and out of that hellhole. Luckily, I get up there most times at 530 am so it isn't too bad, but on the way back to work can be a b!tch

The new Dexron fluid starts to degrade at 270 degrees. At 225 your still OK. OR, if your DIC gives you a message that your tranny fluid is too hot..

is it synthetic? and is it available at autozone?

GM has never stated it is a full sythetic. Many belieive it's blend. I don't know what it is. I do not know if it is available at Autozone. All I know is there is a lot of misinformation about "how hot is too hot". GM states it can take higher temps than what others think is too hot on this thread-that's all I am saying.

yeah I hear you well in the book it says it should be between 180 and 200 and I'm going with that but mine stays around 190 if I'm cruising with the trailer which is fine but if I'm in traffic it does go up to almost to 220 which worries me

where can I get that fluid you're talking about then

Yup the DC traffic is horrible, and it is compounded by the fact that there are a large amount of drivers that are plane rude. It has taken me up to 2hrs to go 11 miles! Normally the drive is between 45-60mins. I can't wait to move! I will say people do have a tendency to think twice before they get a taste of the Chevys "chrome horn"!

This is a long thread, but I tried to read it all. I'm really not sure what the original question was, but I'm towing a 7k lb (loaded) camper with a completely stock trans cooler setup, with no issues. I've towed in some crazy conditions, and topped 10k ft at one point in WY.

 

The size of the cooler is not the only parameter GM considers when designing the system. Thermodynamics must consider the whole system, since heat dissipated by one component negatively affects the next one in line. You may cool the trans fluid, but then pass warmer air through the radiator and over the motor. In all of my towing, my only concern came in the 110f heat of TX, and it wasn't the trans fluid that I was watching. I'm sure that gm considered these wildly varying conditions when sizing the stock coolers, since my own experience has seen excursions on both systems.

Well if GM actually routed the lines like they were supposed to be, it would actually keep all the temps. down. I'm pretty sure on my truck it goes to aux. cooler first, when it should be radiator. If it goes to radiator first, you will actually have cooler air coming from the auxiliary cooler over the radiator and motor.

 

And it is a very long topic. I think on my computer its like 13 or 15 pages haha

It is a long topic if you guys got a little off topic talking about the AN fittings and some line, but all in all it's all been useful information

 

that being said one of the reasons for the coolers not sufficient is because I also have a mild left with larger tires on top of that I'm pulling a trailer 5000 to 6000 pounds for GM might of got it right but not considering what I've done the modifications to the truck

    • Yesterday we brought home a 6yr  old Havanese dog from a nearby SPCA.  We've had her for 24 hours and we are delighted with how well she is adjusting to her new home.  It  was a huge decision to adopt a dog at this stage in our lives but we believe we made the right choice!   it was reported that her first 6 years were ones of neglect.  I think she's already realizing her life is going to get a whole lot better...  so is ours!

    • No doubt, I definitely agree with you. However, considering the 6.2 and 3.0 have been catastrophically failing with very little miles, I figured I would put trouble free. I’m at 18,4xx and still not a single issue.  
    • It’s never dry here but it gets hot. My 4 vehicles I keep at home drive an 18 mile loop. One 6 days a week. Two about 3 days each and one once a month. Only one goes on trips about 4 times a year 1000 to 2000 miles each time. One 26 years old gets driven once a month for 22 years. One 14 years old goes 6 days a week. The other two are recent at 2 and 4 years. All are performing normal no extra service other than that would be half of recommended or severe service in the maintenance manual. No extra water or steam out the exhaust or premature plug wear. I would consider an 18 mile loop would be enough. So apparently once a month at 18 miles for 22 years has kept the collector car running well. About 45 minutes a month. 
    • It is working as designed.  NHT and non NHT trucks have the same exact transmission cooling setup.  NHT just gets a larger radiator.     The transmission cooler loop on these is as follows.     -Transmission out goes into an oil to water heat exchanger (item #1 in the first illustration below).  This exchanger has engine coolant opposite the transmission fluid and uses engine coolant to warm and then regulate the transmission fluid temperature when its in the operating window.   - From the cooler it goes to a thermal bypass valve (item #11 in the 2nd illustration below).  If the ATF has not reached the temp to open the bypass (194F), it loops back.   - When it reaches 194F, the thermostat opens and ATF then flows out to the oil to air auxiliary cooler (item #17 in the 2nd illustration) at the front of the truck.  From there it goes back to the transmission.     Your only fix would be to swap for the PPE thermal bypass delete block which will open the loop to the aux cooler all the time.  It will STILL run warm, probably 170-200F, but that's as low as you'll get it as its still flowing through the oil to water exchanger.
