Tranny over heating while towing

Yes, it will fit like a stock auxiliary cooler. If you get the reducers that chawkins6789 mentioned, and then hook up the quick disconnect fittings from the stock cooler onto those, and then it hooks up exactly like stock (just need to customize a few brackets to mount it). I wish I would have gone this route instead. Here's a link to someone who installed one on another forum:

I like how you used hydraulic line when you installed your most current cooler. Just noticed it when I was looking back on this topic. How much did all that line cost to get made? The stock setup goes from trans. to cooler to radiator. I feel like how you ran it (trans, radiator, cooler) keeps temps. cooler, just because the coolant doesn't heat it up on the way back to the trans.

It runs from trans output(bottom line) to bottom radiator port.

Out of the top radiator port to bottom cooler fitting

Top trans fitting to the trans input(top line).

It runs through the cooler built in the radiator first. As for cash. I paid $400 for the hydraulic work. That includes removing old line and cooler, and all hoses made and the random fittings needed

I can run the lines myself, just wanted to find out the price point of custom hydraulic lines. And I just have it set up like it came from factory (trans, cooler, radiator). I'm pretty sure that's how it is ran. I haven't messed with it yet, but i might if I put in a 6.0 and built tranny

I did drop in a 6.0 and still set up in factory routing.

Oh OK I gotcha. I wasn't sure which line on the tranny was output or input. I just ran them until they looked right haha

Bottom port of tranny goes to bottom port of radiator. That is the fluid hot line

Shouldn't you have the output line from cooler on the bottom to avoid air pockets?

I read that somewhere

This was how the hydro guy recommended it, but he also builds racecars. Also my fluid passes across that cooler twice. So it has to build to get to that top output level. The longer its in there the cooler it can get.

Go to your local hydraulic shop and ask for the price per foot or bulk price. You will need like 20 ft of -6 line. Teflon or rubber is up to you. I went Teflon with crimp fittings so I spent more. You will also need adapters.

    • This is exactly the reason our EV has consumed so much of my driving. I don't want to fire up a cold diesel or gas engine just to drive 2 miles up to the store. It's arguably terrible for an engine. If I'm not driving at least 10 miles and don't need to do truck things, the truck stays parked.   Enter the EV. It's immediately heating or cooling the cabin as needed (heat pump). An engine doesn't need to warm up or be driven gently. I can tear off in it with ZERO guilt. Move the car 1/4 mile from store to store and not think "gee, I'm short-cycling a lukewarm engine".   It doesn't idle in a drive-through. Doesn't idle at stop lights. (OK, neither would the diesel, if I let stop-start have its way, but I don't).   Even moving it out of the garage to wash it... HA! It doesn't need to be started just to move 40 feet. I have cars that I will actually put in neutral and push (no start) in/out of the garage or shop if they absolutely HAVE to be moved. My nice Camaros.

    • I traced the atf cooling system in my 1500 and it comes out of the transmission, into the bar/plate liquid/liquid heat exchanger, as stated above.  Then it crosses over to the external thermostat/bypass and then  to the aux cooler in front of the main radiator.  Hence, on this routing, the PPE thermostat bypass eliminator is an $85 piece of bling that does nothing for reducing atf temps on this truck.  I think I'll temporarily clamp a needle nose vise grip on the coolant feed hose to the bar/plate cooler and see how much the atf temp drops.  With the use of ULV trans fluid, I'm not convinced running the trans cooler than OEM spec is going to be detrimental to the life of the transmission.    I found this interesting on the Dana/Long site stating that they make transmission cooling/heating bar plate heat exchangers.  I worked with Dana/Long on a few projects when I was at the gas powered fun factory. https://www.dana.co.jp/downloads/PTG/Long/Dana_TOC_SpecSht.pdf  Bar plate heat exchangers are just a stack of stamped parallel path fluid channels, assembled and vacuum furnace brazed to make the final assembly.  Want more cooling/heating, just stack more plates until you run out of package space.   Anyway, thanks for the info, much appreciated.
    • I have thought an EV might have some practical value in extending the life of the ICE members of ones fleet. Now....I'm convinced of it. I've been letting my better half access Raven (Mitsubishi Mirage) for her needs while Dizzy has been in the shop. Being the fuel freak I am and given the fact Raven is capable of over 60 mpg in clean air on a warm day I was taken back by the wife's ability to take a car that had used a half a tank of gas that to that point had returned a value of 57 mpg and return in with a decimating 51 mpg for that same tank in that same day in a 15 mile round trip of short hop errands and a stop in the drive through at Micky D's.  😱   Trust me on this. It would take the remainder of that tank driven on the highway to return that tank to just 54 mpg. This is not a Mitsubishi issue. This is an ICE issue that is magnified in vehicles capable of such high fuel economy values. On a percentage basis your 1500 does the same thing. Short hopping an ICE consumes a good deal more fuel and in doing so provides zero additional useable outputs. That entire volume of fuel is wasted in diluting the cylinder walls oil films, creating crankcase moisture and acid content and the resultant wear.    Enter the SLATE. All of that is avoided and the ICE's advantage in range and made useful at reduced wear for your ICE!   Kind'a cool.
