Nav disk....or just buy a Garmin?

The stock 07 nav disk is a complete joke on the tahoe. It has no POI in my town. I saw the 2013 nav disk is releasing next week for 200.

For around 350 you can get a 5 inch touch screen Nuvi with lifetime map AND traffic. The smarter choice I know. Also acts as a handsfree bluetooth, amd you can pair to your phone for faster traffic updates and use the phone as the input device, and comes with a motorized(?) Windshield mount

 

The stock UI and maps GM uses were pretty lame even for when it was made.

 

BUT.....Is it just me or would it bug anyone else that you have a nav but dont use it? Not to keen on the OGM1 since it is so apple centric, pay for map updates and Im an android guy. Paid map updates is what kills it for me.

 

The OEM map schemes are beyond stupid and outdated in a few years. One reason I didnt get tech pack on my Mazda.

I'd do the Garmin. I have a work issued TomTom with free updates and I do it quarterly. I hate the TomTom interface but the updates are good.

I would do the Garmin, I borrowed a new one for my last Colorado trip, it was very easy to use, I even figured out how to set it so elevation showed on the main screen. Cool!

If you have a smart phone the new Google Map with navigation is sweet. Now you can load the map info directly to the phone so that if you loose network connections, the GPS can take over.

 

If that does not float your boat - then I would spend the $$ on a Garmin

Yeah, my only thought is dont forget to load the map! It can only download so much map,(like 60 MB worth max) you cant just download the entire trip. If I zoom out to a level of my entire county it says area is too large. So you better hope you dont hit a spot with no coverage, and every 50 miles youll have to leave navigation, enter maps, download, reenter nav, and need a connection to recalculate.

 

My Galaxy S4 has a stock Scout nav app, and for 24.99 a month unlocks the full version. The 24.99 allows offline download and live traffic. It looks like a reskinned UI of a basic tomtom, no speed limits or lane guidance. All maps together come in at under 3GB. Cant figure out why Google wont allow it.

Get a Garmin... Easy to use... updates all the time and just a much better interface.

I have seen the coming soon stuff and hopefully it will be as advertised I wish they had a more definite time frame - summer is way too vague.

 

It does look like there may be a size limit - I just did a section of eastern Oregon where cell service is sparse and that was 76.4M.

 

I will admit that I am more used to my old Garmin than the smart phone. But if Google comes through this summer with everything they say ( I have signed up to beta test) I won't really need a new Garmin.

Think you missed by point. Google is NOT EVEN CLAIMING they will have offline nav in the future. Your waiting for something they haven't announced.
