Mirror heaters

I notice that when I do a remote start,, that the mirror heaters DON'T come on. I had a 2010 GMC Sierra and they came on. along with the back window defroster and the heated seats.. My seats work,, kind of,, they get just slightly warm, but the mirror heaters do not work at all.. I checked with my dealer today and they could find nothing about being able to make them come on with the remote start. I love the fact that I can have a fog free mirror when backing out of my drive in the morning. Not sure how to PM the GM customer service that posts on here, other wise would ask them. Anybody got any ideas how to turn the heaters on? Thanks

I wrote Jennifer and included the seat issue. I didn't think about the mirrors though. GM has to know it's a software bug, my guess is they just won't acknowledge it until there is a fix.

I also understand that the auto climate control no longer heats or cools as needed when remote started as the '07 - '13 models did. You have to remember to put the HVAC settings where you'll need them. So now we can add the defrost, mirror heat, and heated seats to the list. Not happy to hear these type of things. Seems like we're going backwards on convenience features with these new trucks.

I never thought about the heated mirror and windows coming on with remote start till I read this post. However yesterday when I got into my truck after remote starting it. The mirror/window heat was on already when I went to turn it on. So I guess it does work sometimes?

I wonder if it is a GMC thing,, my 2010 Sierra mirror heaters came on,, but my 2014 Silverado don't

Per the manual, the mirrors defog when the rear window defogger is activated and the switch must be in the on/run position. It MAY come on with remote start based on ambient conditions, but the indicator light does not come on during this time. The heated seats will work when remotely started, but turn off when key is turned on. You must manually turn them back on. Also, heated seat performance will be reduced when seat it unoccupied.

That's all I can find regarding these issues in my manual. If it doesn't work, a setting could be turned off (I checked mine to make sure), or there is an issue with your truck. Hope it can be of some help.

I got a phone call from a GM tech Friday afternoon,, said he would look into it. My dealer called this morning,, they heard from the tech,, said no software updates at this time, but have it documented now. Said would keep me informed if they hear anything more. So,, I guess I have to wait till I get in the truck to turn the mirror heaters on for the time being.

Heated/cooled seats must be enabled in personalization menu to work with remote start.

From manual:

The heated or cooled seats will not

turn on during a remote start unless

they are enabled in the vehicle

personalization menu. See Remote

Vehicle Start on page 2-6 and

Vehicle Personalization on

page 5-44.

Not sure if this is also true of the heated mirrors.

It also says the seat indicator will not come on, and that the seats will turn off when the key is turned (same as gmt900 generation)

I had the seats already turned on,, my dealer said they made sure they were on too.. I remotely started the truck, left it run for almost 10 minutes, the mirrors were still fogged up.. got in, drove about a mile, after i turned them on,, fog was all gone, so I know they did not turn on. Am sure that there is a simple software fix.

I was just at the dealership this morning about the whole remote start thing. There have been a lot of correct posts here on this. The seats do come on, but at a reduced setting. And as far as the heat and defroster go, must remember to preset at night. I thought my mirrors weren't working either. I also feel this is a step back from the GMT900,s. I traded in a 2007 nbs LTZ for my new truck, and it had the features we're looking for. The dealership had heard nothing from other customers on this, but was sure that with the colder weather he will hear more.

Defroster does not need to be turned on at night. Mine works with the remote start. There's a setting in the radio...

Sent from my SCH-I535

It seems if you have a GMC the heaters in the mirror work,, not the Chevys, got another phone call from a GM tech this morning,, basically said,,, Sorry,, that is not available on the Chevy, Guess I should have bought another GMC. There is no place in the settings in the radio to turn them on,, just the seat heaters is all. Seems there should be someone at GM smart enough to change the software in the Chevys to make things work right.

I have a 2014 Silverado LTZ and my heated mirrors work when the heated seats and defroster come on with the auto start. The defrost light comes on automatically when I put the key in the truck. This has only happened once on mine as it hasn't gotten too cold here yet. I am not sure if I left the defroster on from the night before though. I need to experiment with this.. Also the heated seats seem to work but it it such a low heat setting im not really sure sometimes. When it gets to -20 F in Alaska in the winter Im sure it will be easier to tell if it is working or not though!

    • I tried tapping it.  This might sound like a dumb question, you should feel vibration or some type of noise when it turns on? Can someone please verify? Thank you all!
    • I feel better now for my own view point and actions or lack there of towards the dealership service theme reading your post and others. GM corporate is who offers the two free oil changes on the HD trucks and I bought my truck in Feb of 2025 and those oil change offers run out within 2 years I believe and I highly doubt I will be using either one of them. I had asked if I could officially give those free services to another customer ( a friend ) and they said no, its all a GM corporate thing based on the vehicle in question. What that service advisor did however was go into a little story about how such and such customer was denied engine warranty because he had done his own oil changes because then they are not documented ... you see where that goes and so an employee playing the game of scaring the customer into having the service work done there most certainly triggered my thought process. At a later date I did talk to the person who handles warranty claims at the dealership and she said to be sure to document the oil changes and keep receipts for the oil and filter ( coped the receipts from cases of Mobil oil and case of filters I bought from them ) and the vehicles VIN, the date of service, mileage etc and staple that together as a record I would give them if that was ever needed and I keep my own log book for services for each vehicle as well. Oh and about 8 months after I bought the truck the dealer starts calling me to offer a maintenance service since they haven't seen my vehicle show up on their system ... for the mere fee of 300.00 Canadian to change the oil and rotate the tires and a few other minor checks and I declined the offer, I get the call again a couple of months later for the same thing and she could tell I was not interested and she asked if they should take my name off the call list and I said yes, do that !.    By the way did you happen to keep your factory oil filter to open it up and see the surprises inside as I expect some will show up as per the odd little sliver of metal shaving and particles that the filter does trap along with bits of grey silicone sealer that come off of the inside edge of mating surfaces. I have cut open every filter so far on my truck although few miles but have changed the oil often and the second filter was vastly better with very little of anything, that first filter was the unsettling one as I expected it would be.
    • I get why they do this…but man…not ideal. I only extract on inboard boat engines because the drains are buried and even then I hate it because it’s easy to leave a quart behind with that method.   They should market it as an “oil refresh” not oil change!
    • I only get oil changed where I can watch. Valvoline pulls through the dipstick into a see thru glass. When done they show me the dipstick. About the only way they can mess up is using the wrong oil. But that secret wouldn’t stay secret long. Honda uses TQ wrenches on everything. You can watch through a plate glass window. Discount tires does that with tires. Trust but verify.
    • I would not argue that with you. It would be pointless to argue against the truth and you speak the truth.    My question and in fact the entire point of this thread is an exploration into the levers of wear which happens no matter how well we maintain our powertrains.    Some of these levers we exert a good deal of influence over which can and do result is lower wear, longer powertrain life. Some others we are sort of stuck with.    An engine is typically done when the ring to bore seal no longer is able to do the job effectively. Normally the first thing to go in a engine otherwise well maintained and adult driven is this seal.    Looking into the means, methods, products and attitudes that influence the rate of wear seems a worthwhile inquiry to me.
