Navigation Updates?

This is one of the biggest scams going, IMO. Google Maps on your phone is free and updated fairly often, and offers the same route guidance (including vocal instructions) as any in dash nav system. But the in dash systems require you pay an unreasonable amount of money to be behind what google maps gives for free? :fume:

It wouldn't be as big of a deal if it were priced reasonably - say under $50. But $200?! Completely unreasonable.

You purchase a $150 Garmin on ebay and it comes with free lifetime updates. You purchase a $3000 navigation system with your new GM truck and have to pay for updates. This is total BS. If GM really wanted to keep customers happy and loyal, they would offer updates for no charge and thank you for purchasing a GM vehicle. GM, here is a chance to get a leg up on the competition.

I didn't pay $3k for my nav but I really think $200 is a bit crazy. Should get at least one free update.

However, my coworker said to update his Lexus was around $400

Newbie here, don't know if this is the right place to post this question but here goes

I have a 2013 Silverado 2500HD LTZ Duramax.

I received a maps update DVD for my radio for Christmas, but I cannot figure out how to get the front of the radio to open up to replace the one that is presently in there.

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

just pop the panel off around it and there are 4 screws holding the radio in place. thats it.

All I want to do is update the maps not replace the radio

I don't remember the exact menus but go into "Settings" and look for "Navigation" then something like "Map Info" or "System Info". Eventually you will get to a screen that shows the map location and version number. Somewhere on that screen there should be a button that says "Eject Disc".

When I do (MENU > NAV > Map Database Information > Change), I don't have the "Change" option

But thanks anyway

These nav systems are hard drive based systems. I was told the dealers have to do the updates at this point..

Newer ones more likely use a solid state memory storage system. Old Navs in my '07, '12, '13 Avalanches had hard drives and you could actually transfer songs on DVDs or record radio broadcasts on the hard drive - listening carefully you could hear the hard drive grinding away......these are the systems update-able by DVD. The new 8" MyLink w/ Nav in the '16 doesn't appear to use a hard drive, no recording capability and dead quiet operation, not sure how they update.

This is correct. The older style used DVD's that had to be inserted into the NAV unit. The 2014+ use a hard-drive. It is updated using a USB thumb drive (after the update downloads you can remove the flash drive). It is tied to your VIN and can't be used in any other vehicle.

This was one of the biggest drivers for me trading in my '14 SLT for a '17 SLE. Google Maps via Android Auto blows away my old factory nav and I don't have to dish out ransom money for updates.
