Navigation Updates?

Recommended Posts

This was one of the biggest drivers for me trading in my '14 SLT for a '17 SLE. Google Maps via Android Auto blows away my old factory nav and I don't have to dish out ransom money for updates.

Ok. Stupid question(s):

Do you get Google Maps to project on your in dash screen?

Do all these update discussions assume you have a paid Onstar subscription?

Yup. It's like a super simplified Android OS that gets displayed on your dash. Only functions are maps/navigation, music, calls, and general notifications (weather etc). My fave feature! Would take it any day of the week over my old factory nav.

It was around $90 for the update. I imagine it's yearly.

It's yearly (or just about -- sometimes they go 18-24 months before an update). They usually cost around $140-$160. This is the only official place to get the updates:

I had heard that if your vehicle is still under manufactures warranty, the service dealer will update your nav system at no cost to you. Is that true?

No not true Navigation updates are at your expense.  I wanted to get the update since mine is from 2014 but I read on here were people updated theirs and yet some roads and POIs around them that were newer but still not in the update.  I wich the website where you buy updates had a way to preview my area to see if the new roads and places were on it.

If you are talking about map updates it is 100% false.  Updating is at your own cost (usually $160 but on sale right now).  The link I put in the post above yours is the ONLY site to get the updates and they are tied to your VIN so you can't buy them anywhere else.

It's only $139 vs $159!....  OUCH!!

You spend a ton of money buying these truck, then they want to hit you with overpriced map updates?

It's as bad as onstar itself!

No thanks.. I'll stick to my Apple maps via CarPlay. Easier to use (IMO) and always up to date.

while i would love for map updates to be free, $150 to a $60k truck is pennies... lol pennies

It's not really about the money. It's about quality. So far the navigation system is worth next to nothing; totally useless. The voice activation is about the same quality. The maps are outdated when they deliver. The screen is a low resolution and in monocolor. it has limited storage and limited searches. I don't feel I'm getting what I paid for.

Mine works great. It's no HDTV but color is great, my Google voice synced with my truck can do virtually anything I throw at it. I conduct a lot of business using my truck without having to touch my phone. I haven't used google maps to get somewhere since I bought my truck in June 2016. Update the maps and maybe you'll like it more

Bingo!.. The factory nav is lousy IMO compared to navs incorporated into Android and iphones.

Agreed, I'll stick my Garmin with the free lifetime maps on the window. I believe GM is using a Tom Tom system and it sucks. I was happy to see the nav in my truck, but now that I used it I'll never put out the money for another GM Navigation system
