Power Steering

My truck has been to two different dealerships with the power steering failure. I believe most of the fails occurred after a remote start, but not all of them. Where I live it has been right near, but above, freezing. Which doesn't qualify for cold. I sure hope it will get fixed soon.

Is getting a new rack installed the solution?

Also for people new to the problem, mine always works again if I leave the truck off for 10 min. This is so the CPUs shut down I guess.

Yep, that's the same message, same situation. Time to get the new rack assembly, I hope you have better luck getting yours done in a timely manner.

post-128764-0-71406800-1394046403_thumb.jpgI have had the exact same issue with my 2014 4.3L Silverado. It has happened 3 times so far when the temperature outside falls below freezing. They have re-programed the Power Control Module both times with no avail. My local dealer service manager says he doesn't know what else to do... Really? This is very frustrating!

The re-program didn't fix mine either.. a new power steering rack did though.

Now even power steering goes through a computer? I like my old hydraulic steering better all the time. I have electric power steering in the Sonic, but no problems yet.

Just got my truck back after it's been in the shop for 7 days and it seems to be just fine. They installed a new rack at my request and no issues so far today and it's 32 degrees outside. Thanks everyone for the advise about the new rack!

Just got my first check engine light today. I got a "Service Power Steering" and "Service 4wd" back to back. I usually do not use the remote start, but this morning I did because it was snowing. I really did not notice any difference in how the power steering felt after receiving the message. Has anyone got both the messages stated above back to back?

Thanks in advance!!!

Any of you using a Range AFM delete module. Reason I ask is I live in the deep south(hot) and got the service ps message the other day, then service stabilitrac, then check engine light came on and the truck would shift weird out of low gear, I checked the codes and got a PO700 (transmission ) and UO100(communication). I later cleared the code and it has been fine since. I also removed the Range after the mess up. PS was lost for about 45 seconds too. I know that the Ranges sometime will mess with the computer system. I will leave mine out for a while to see if issue re-appears.

That's a 10-4 ghost rider, I do have the Range AFM and I got the PS and 4wd service messages today. My check engine light went off after about 1 hour and everything seems fine, I did not notice any difference in the way the PS feels when I got the PS service warning. I have had the Range for about 6 months and have never had a problem with it. I am going to remove it as well and see if that was the culprit.

My power steering went out yesterday. I started it up turned the wheel and right in mid turn the power steering stopped and the service power steering came on. I took it straight over to the dealer and had it tested. the service writer said he never had this happen yet. So they pulled a code and the power steering module was bad. I don't know how it works but I guess the computer controls the power steering. So I guees it isn't only the cold to make this happen.

I too received the message "Steering assist is reduced drive with care", and "Stabilitrak off", on my SECOND day of ownership, with 130 miles. I had to purchase this truck from a distant dealership, and my usual local dealer says I need to rent a vehicle. (for first day only)

The truck was shipped in the 3rd week of July '14, purchased 9/2/14

There's NO F'in way I'm reaching into MY pocket for this...

Well I have to say I'm really really disappointed with my new 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500 and the bad (rude) customer service that the dealership and lack of knowledge that the dealership had re-guarding power steering issue.

Long story but I had to take my truck in for the 3rd recall, and I had free oil change coming. While it was in there I wanted the power steering looked at. My steering wheel will turn but makes a rubbing noise and when I turn right or left it will stay in that place and not turn back to the normal position.

I dropped the truck off the night before service and called the next day at my lunch hour to see how it was coming. The service rep told me that the recalls were done and the oil change was completed and the techs were at lunch that they would look at the steering issue when they got back to lunch.

I called at 4 pm when I got off work to see how it was coming. The service rep told me that they were still doing the recall programming that it was taking way longer than they wanted. I asked him why he told me at noon that it was all done but the steering. He couldn't answer me. Then I asked how late they were open and asked about the steering. He said they will not look at the steering because I have a lift on the truck. I said why didn't you tell me that when I dropped it off? He got real rude with me and said they don't even look at vehicles that have been modified. I have 14k miles on this 2014. I had a 2005 with a 6 in lift and put 250k+ miles on it.

I said to the customer service rep that if it my lift problem I understand it wouldn't be covered but my lift didn't modify the oem steering at all. He then told me that those trucks are not designed for 35 in tires and a 6 in lift? I said why is the dealer down the road (10 miles) selling the same truck with the same lift Rocky Ridge package? I said full size Silverados have been running lifts since the 70's and that is why I wanted one. They are my favorite -- well they use to be.

I've had this truck 7 months and 3 recalls, very very bad ordering dealership process, and the worst customer service I have ever dealt with from Chevy.

I then asked the dealer if my warranty wouldn't cover my issue could he tell me what the issue is? He said they do not have anybody in the shop who knows about the new electronic steering. He said the rack and pinon was what his guys knew. I said well what if the electronic power steering is the issue and has nothing to do with my lift -- heaven knows the other electronic recalls were messed up. Once again he said they will not even trouble shoot it.

I stopped in at the other dealer down the road who I didn't buy the truck from and they said they would look at it but couldn't get me in until next week sometime.

It is a shame because I saved money to buy this truck and dropped 45k on it (LTZ, etc). Only 14k miles and I shouldn't have bought it. Bad experience with GM when I ordered it, bad communication from GM and the dealer while it was on order and now they will not even stand behind their product.

I have to say I should have bought a Ford or Toyota. I have been a Chevy guy my entire life. Had camaros Beretta, I currently have a 04 Tahoe.....

Makes my stomach sick to think that all these years and this company is a total joke. If I didn't put some much TLC in my truck I would seriously think about trading it in.

Oh well its Friday and I have to go drive my 45k poor crappy power steering to get some dinner. Been three days now driving it that way and nobody can tell me what the problem is. The place I got the lift said it is the electronic steer GM oem issue not a Rough Country lift issue.

This is BS. You need to call GM directly. That lift has nothing to do with your issue. They have lifted trucks on the lot with the same steering units. Keep pushing it.

Just got back from my annual elk hunting trip in Colorado and yes my power sterring went out on me during this time at 8000 miles. Tempurtures was below freezing but it happened during the day at 50-60 degrees F as I was driving and almost ran into a tree from this. Good thing I didn't have my trailer at the time and had dropped it off at the campsite. This is something you don't want to happen while driving as it's very dangerous. The truck got towed to the dealership as I wasn't going to be driving down these mountains with no power steering. The GMC roadside assistance was great and got everything set up and the truck was towed great service on this. But they ended up getting a tow truck company who didn't know what he was doing and scratched the front bumper of the front tow hooks which will now need to be replaced and another thing to worry about. I then had to drive back to town everyday during my hunting trip to call the dealership on the status and they had to order the whole assembly unit to be replaced. The truck has had the power steering assembly replaced and alignment has been done and so far for three days it's been worry free. The bad thing is the service was terrible as the part was delayed and service rep acted like my truck was last on the list with no real updates or he never even bothered to ask me for a loaner car I had to request this. I was stuck in the mountains hunting with my trailer and needed it done in 3-4 days but it took 5 working days. Frustrated on the service of this dealership as the people are not friendly even when I went to grab a broken down loaner car as they said it will not make up the mountains. I was thinking in my head if the loaner car isn't going to make it up the mountain find me one that will. This is a dealership that is already located in the mountains shouldn't you have cars with the cababilities already. I had also mentioned to this dealership that during it's time there if they can perform the service recall also while it's still in the shop and they said there was two service recalls that they will perform on also. Sure enough when I went to pick up the truck only the power steering was replaced and alignment performed. I mean if the truck is there to get repaired please fix all the other problems it has with it before I pick it up. This service is by far the worst ever that I have experienced and would not recommend them for anything. Power steering assembly part was delayed, loaner car was very old, people are not friendly there, service recalls weren't fixed, car wasn't washed or vacummed, picked up the truck after hours and car was suppose to be locked with keys under floor mats as I had my spare keys which was never done had to have the front desk personnel get me the keys. They will get my feedback on there service that's for sure. Now need to make some more phone calls on the scracthed front bumper where the tow hooks are as I'm not happy at all. Now I drive the car worrying about the power steering as it's something I will never forgot since I almost got into an accident while this happened. Drivers beware and drive safely.
