There is a slight drone on the V4, but mostly when it's on V8. Now' I'm curious, the third cat you are talking about is just before the muffler correct? I've heard people saying the third cat was by the tailpipe, but I'm sure that was just a resonator. What is "DoD", I'm guessing you have a tuner, which tuner is it? I'm worried about warranty issues so I'm not to inclined to remove the cat or install a tuner as I was told by my dealer if I do either it will void my warranty.

Just to let others know that want to remove the third cat. When I did it, I was in the process of doing tune runs for my custom tune, Once removed I drove another 100 miles or so and did a 1800-2500 rpm steady drive recording, my data shifted lean meaning Lew had to fatten up the mixture. I'm unsure if the ECM on these trucks has a learn ability so I would be cautious in removing it if you don't plan to tune ( I say cautious, as 20 years ago I blew a hole through a piston on my scooter that shifted lean. It was a 12.5:1 compression EVO motor) I know the late model Harley (FI) ECM can adjust for exhaust but not for intake.

Just my experience,

Mike

It does learn Mike and would be fine had he not tuned that lean swing out of it but Lew is just tuning all the learn out of it if that makes sense. That's part of the game, make the ECM as close to perfect as possible so that it doesn't have to compensate for anything. The results give you a cleaner running vehicle, better throttle response, mpg and power. The ECM can only learn/compensate for so much and when we tune the learn out of it, it gives you more room for error later on down the road next time we make these small mods.

So your saying do your mods first then do a tune?

That's the way I would go. This way you get the best performance out of each mod. If someone's doing a custom tune they have every thing to work with up front, and can adjust accordingly.

I would always used can tunes before, one of the reasons I joined this forum was to find out more about tuners and pros and cons of each. Haven't read about anyone blowing their sh er stuff up yet.

IC, so if I was to say remove the third cat, open up the exhaust and put a high flow air cleaner on, it would eventually learn or is that to much? Just curious.

Thanks,

Mike

Cut mine out from the muffler back, added a flowsound muffler and came out the side of the body in front of the wheel with a 4" double walled tip.

Here is what the final product looks like. She now sounds like a truck

Correct.. Throw headers on and you would be pushing it. When I say it will learn, that means it will run safely and typically with only minimal power gains compared to what's possible. You will certainly gain a lot more with a custom tune once you start combining mods like that.

Definately Yes to tuning after mods, you are throwing money away by tuning prior to mods.

Man I was debating on cutting the 3rd cat but now I don't really want to risk voiding warranty right now..

I am looking at getting new exhaust as I want to hear that rumble from outside the truck. However I want to make sure I avoid getting a drone or excessive noise inside the truck. I am looking at getting the new Flowmaster Outlaw system with the 10 Series muffler. Has anyone tried this yet? Has anyone got videos of aftermarket installs that shows no drone but maintains that real truck sound outside. Thanks for the help in advance!

I think if you go cat back and stick to the longest muffler (generally more baffles) that is single in dual out 3 inch you should have less or no drone. Mine (video posted earlier) is loud and has some drone because I went small muffler and only 2.5 inch outlets.

Well, the 10 series is definitely not what you want if you don't want inside cab noise or drone. I think there are a lot of sound clips on here and I even have a thread floating around with sound clips of a flowmaster 70 series with a few videos.

Steve, thanks for the insight. Hopefully others will gain knowledge by this discussion.

My main concern is drone. I haven't seen any videos or reviews with a 10 series installed though. I think the 70 would be a little too tame for my taste though.
