I've done this exact swap and still have the chrome grill in back yard. I'll check it when I get home shortly.

The inserts look like they can easily removed. But you would probably need a special tool to keep from breaking the lock tabs. In fact the entire chrome surround looks like it could be popped off.

Hey bigsapper.

Thanks for the pics. Is yours a 2014? What exact model? And if you're comfortable what's the last 8 of the VIN? I may have to resort to ordering that exact grill to get mine to fit.

Cheers

Thanks for responding so quick.

Were the inserts changeable only on the aftermarket one you installed? Or on the OEM grill too?

PS. Did you trade the truck for something else?

My original was an OEM full chrome just like in the pictures above. I purchased an OEM one with the black inserts instead, and just swapped the entire grille. Both of the OEM grills did have that same clip style to remove the inserts.

I traded the truck in for a F150, I had issues with vibrations that couldn't be resolved.

Mine is a 2014 Regular Cab LT. I replaced the entire grill with the one with black honey comb inserts. It was configured the same way. I got it from a member here.

what about removing just the red letters? Is that possible? Or just paint them maybe.

I think in theory it is possible, but you have to know exactly where you're at, as there are several screws to remove (again, I think). I used vinyl on my letters and never had to take them off.

Good infor here, thanks!

I bought the replacement black bowtie for the front. Anyone have any luck replacing it without grill removal? My fat hands can't get behind the grill to press the clips out, so I'm thinking I need to remove the grill.

Yeah I would be interested in knowing this as well... I'm gonna do the same thing.

Look for a thread I posted in recently, it can be done without removing the grill.

1 HR START TO FINISH FOR ME.

I just completed this job yesterday and I took the upper colored piece above the bumper with the grill, 4 bolts on the bottom if you get under the truck. Really easy to remove the painted piece afterward. The most difficult part for me was seperating the chrome from the mesh because I was careful not to break any of the plastic clips. Really not a hard job at all. Pics in the link below.

Thank you to the OP for such a good write up! Made it super easy. I found it easier to remove the bumper pad with the grill attached since I was doing it on my own. Then I put the grill back on and snapped the pad back into place after the grill was secured to the truck.
