First road trip on the new truck.

Hey everyone what's going on? First post and let me start off by saying that I love my new 2014 chevy silverado LT. I've owned a 95 and 03 s-10 and a 01 silverado and recently purchased the 2014 in November.

 

This past weekend my wife and I took the truck from Southern California to my home town Kerman California. It was roughly 265 miles. The truck ran great and at the end of my trip, I got 24.5 mpg. Now on the way home I got 25.7 mpg and noticed something. Central Valley is more of a flat driving condition. Small long inclines and long small declines in road conditions. I understand that on the small long inclines the truck will prob use full power and not v4. But on the long small decline in the roads you would think v4 right? Coming home as I traveled threw the grape vines with large inclines and declines in the roads v4 was working. Even if I had enough speed down hill I held v4 at 70 mph uphill. And all the way home to brea ca. I was pretty much 75mph in v4

 

Question why worse mpg in the Central Valley compared to Los Angeles?

I dont know... but you should be happy. I dont know how some of your guys get these 24+ MPG. You guys must be babying the hell of it. Where I live it's totally flat... I get like 18 ...highway only. I don't drive that fast... like 77 give or take a few. But I do have 3.42 gears..

Cruise control 70 mph pretty much the whole way to the Central Valley. I didn't want to hot rod it since it's still new. I have 1200 miles of mixed traffic conditions and it was the first trip open roads no traffic. On the way home I was between 70-85 taking advantage of faster speeds while it was in v4.

Curious as to what rear differential gear ratio you have?

I have 3.42 rear end and I got 20mpg on a highway trip this weekend. Cruise was set on 75. I am averaging 17 - 17.5 around town. A BIIIIIG improvement over the 12.5 -13mpg I was getting with the 2011 6.2L with the same rear end and 6 speed transmission.

Those are great mpg numbers! No need to be upset over 1.2 mpg difference going vs. coming. Could have been slightly different wind.

Toolk mine on a trip yesterday. I only had 80 miles on it, but I managed 22.2 mpg. I have the 3.42 rear end... At 70mph, my truck stayed in V8. It would only go to V4 at 65mph.

Not complaining at all just notice a big difference in the way the truck was handling between central cal and southern cal. Just didn't know if anyone else notice differences between small grade and large grades.

Instant mileage display is not equal to average MPG for the whole fuel tank. I usually do not get 25.7 MPG average even with my '09 Impala V6. I call BS on that claim. Plus the claim that V4 mode was maintained at 70 MPH going uphill.

I second that... If I ran into any type of small incline on the road it would kick v8 immediately...

I made a 500 mile trip yesterday from Virginia to Ohio through the mountains and got just over 19 mpg for the whole trip, however for the first 150 miles of the trip (flat, southeastern Va) I was getting around 22 mpg. I'm noticing that the mpg is very sensitive to the V8/V4 mode. If you can set the cruise and stay on flat roads, mid 20's is definitely reachable. My best 25 mile stretch was 27.5 mpg! BTW, I have the 3.42 rear end.
