Dropped my truck off this morning. Advisor mentioned something about a software update, but I am not holding my breath.

Dealer did a the software update and said it was fixed. Radio blacked out and dropped my Bluetooth while I was still in their parking lot. Back in it went! Had a GM Tech come out to look at it and this was what I was told. "The update is really all we can do, however if there are trouble codes stored for an error, then we can replace the radio."

 

So it sounds like GM has no clue what is going on with this issue.

I think I would have responded, "Error codes or no, the unit is malfunctioning, it is under warranty, I want the system replaced." Obviously the issue isn't with the programming. The issue must be in the hardware. They should be obliged to begin replacing system components until the problem is repaired.

Same with '16 Silverado with the latest auto-android update. Main screen went blank and remained dark....still dark after multiple starts...BUT screen still worked with the camera only when shifted into Reverse...removed and examined the RDO fuse in the passenger side cluster for about a minute which was OK.......screen came to life as soon as the fuse was reinserted.

 

Apparently a logic screw up somewhere in a million lines of code......hopefully they'll correct it in a few years.

OMG guys reading this makes my blood pressure go up. I mean first you have the radio that doesn't work which... Okay I get that things happen. But there ought to be a way to fix something when it's broke, right?

 

BTW.... Alpine makes a front end to replace the factory touch screen that includes the entire bezel with the climate control area and the AC vents and all of that.

 

The screen itself is a 10 inch touch screen and it interfaces with all of the OEM electronics and sensors and cameras and a whole bunch of other stuff that you can add to it.

 

It is the most bad mama jama front end that I have ever seen to replace an OEM radio or even an after-market unit for that matter it is just stunning!!!! That being said, it's $4,000!!!!!!! ROTFLMAO (But I want one BAAAAD.) :)

 

But what really troubles me about the general consensus of the responses on how GM / Chevy regards repairing the problem is what I think everyone should be extremely concerned about not just here but across the board with any make or manufacturer these days.

 

That is the new boilerplate response that "It's not throwing codes so we can't fix it because it's not telling us what to fix".

 

I had my brand new truck with 245 miles on it in the shop last week because the Collision warning and the Lane Keep Assist (or the Lane Warning system for that matter)

DOES NOT WORK AT ALL.

 

I know it has to be related to the camera because the camera is what tells it what to do. But it's not kicking codes so as far as the quote unquote "system" is concerned it's working correctly.

 

When mine was in there was a white High Country doing the exact same thing. Or should I say not doing the exact same thing. They had been working on that one for 2 days and couldn't figure it out.

 

So I dropped by there today to pick up my new floor mats and to order some nice sill plates and I asked what the status was.

 

You guessed it. They still don't know what to do with mine. And the High Country... It's still in the shop!

 

They put that guy in a rental / longer. And I guess he's happy.... who knows.

 

It just seems insane to me that they can design a system and know exactly how it works but when it doesn't work they have no clue how to fix it. (Unless of course it's giving them error messages.)

 

Then when it says fix this or fix that they go after it. But without the messages it's like monkeys humping footballs around there. I mean it's not the shops fault because the guys at the shop didn't design the systems.... but you would think at some point that they (GM) would take individuals from these dealerships and train them on these systems to where they could take some sort of initiative and start trying to troubleshoot on their own.

 

That is the problem however... We're in an age where they do not trouble shoot anymore, they do not try to get to the bottom of things anymore, the plug a scanner in and wait for the scanner to tell them what's wrong. And if it doesn't tell them where to look then they just push it to the side and go get something else that does tell them what's going on and where to look and what parts bin to look in.

 

From the post that talks about logic to the one that talks about they should start putting new parts in and making it work all of that makes sense... To us. LOL

 

It's getting a little ridiculous if you ask me. I miss the analog days. ;)

 

I know if mine goes in the shop for a week or two they better put me in something every bit as nice if not nicer than what I'm already driving. Just go ahead and put me in a Stingray 3 LT that'll work. :D

It's a waste of time getting the unit (hardware) replaced if they haven't come up with a fix for it and chances are you'll get a radio manufactured before the vehicle without the latest update, or the new one will work the same way and something else will get screwed up with the install. All you can do is get the latest software rev. and put up with it until they do come up with a software fix. No different than the bugs and constant revs. on home computer software.

 

I can live with popping the RDO fuse every few months to reboot the radio/Nav, but they should acknowledge their shortcomings ,and provide hardware reboot capability and software updating using removable media.

Just got a call from the dealer, they found the HMI module and its associated data cable to be bad. They want to replace both, but these modules are on national back order and GM has no ETA on when they will be available.

 

So anyone having this issue, advise the dealer to have these parts checked.

I'm having similar issues, Mine is a 2015 Silverado, the 8inch screen goes blank, the steering controls do work, so I am able to tune the XM on favorites only through the DIC in the center of the cluster, one time I was playing a CD, there was no way to switch media. The backup camera works, I do notice the screen "dimming" and getting brighter....The Bluetooth no longer sync's with my I-Phone. I also noticed that the "phone" icon is not lit up, (so you cant press it and connect it). When it's out none of the stereo control buttons on the unit work...volume, power ect...I've had some weird displays show up several times. I called my Service Guy.. I'm waiting to take it to the dealer, I might try the battery disconnect, but I'm thinking it won't fix this. My Service Advisor said they need the truck so they can reproduce it at the dealership. Not happy about that. I have pics of the screens They read stuff like " STATUS: Initializing...

Please wait! Searching for medium with valid download data.

Then STATUS: Update Failed!

Insert update media and remove others System is shutting down in 266 sec. There is a red box with copying 0/100 then the seconds countdown and it goes blank...

I cant seem to upload the images...

Any input?? or is it time to take her in???

Just picked my truck up for an unrelated issue, but I asked about the radio and parts availability. Was told they have heard nothing! parts still on national back order.

I have a 2015 Sierra Denali in the shop now for the black screen. I had my cabin air filter changed recently and when I was driving shortly after that the screen just blacked out. Not sure if the two maybe related or not, seeing as the HMI is right next to the filter. If you touch the screen it has an audible click as if its working just not displaying anything. It came on temporarily and then went black and has been for the last 3 days. Took it to the dealership for the software update but that didn't do any good. Dealer is saying now that I need a new screen and maybe HMI. Of course I have more than 36K miles so no warranty..... I'm open for opinions if y'all have any. Id rather not throw $1,200 worth of parts at it and hope it fixes it. Do any of y'all have a wiring schematic from the screen to the HMI? I will happily chase wires before spending the money for new parts that MIGHT fix it. I'm hoping something just isn't making good contact, but I know that's wishful thinking.

My 2016 GMC Sierra with 701 miles was in Baker Motors in Charleston SC for diagnosis for my screen going blank on Friday. Technician said he has no idea what's going on cause the "modules" are not connecting to each other. The service dept says they may have had this problem once in the past and have no GM service bulletins on this problem. It looks like this problem has a serious history per this conversation. They kept the truck to take another look on Monday. I'll go back with this info and see what develops.

One month ago I bought a New 2016 Silverado 3500 HD and the Navigation/Radio/Console randomly reboots, looses navigation, and disconnects my phone. It has also changed radio stations without being prompted.

 

It is completely random. I went for a week without it happening and now it has happened 2 days in a row. I asked the dealership what they would do to troubleshoot and they said a factory reset was the first thing to try. I can do this myself in the console (when it works), but it doesn't solve the problem.

 

I have read that several other people are experiencing this issue. What has resolved it--and how do you get the dealership to fix it right even without duplication?

 

I need my truck to haul. I can't leave it at the dealership for days with a mechanic trying to reproduce the problem.

Update on 2016 silverado the dealer replaced the cluster back in mid June haven't had an issue sinc. They told me the center screen wasn't communicating to the cluster due to something in the cluster had gone bad so that was the only fix they had. I had video of the issue and emailed it to my gm rep as well as my dealer contact because they didn't want to do anything because they couldn't reproduce issue but once they seen video the gm rep knew what the fix was and advised the dealer to change the cluster out. The truck hasn't had any issues since an I have put about 1700 miles since the work was done

Parts finally came in, just dropped it off this morning to have the HMI module replaced. Hopefully this will cure my radio blackout issues.

Just got my truck back (2016 Chevrolet Silverado LT). Waited 11 days to get it back. The majority of those days were spent waiting for the HMI module to get to the dealership. Turns out that my dealership has had to deal with this issue before; my specific issue was that the radio display would turn off and on and my volume knob and power button would not function and the radio would sometimes keep playing even when the screen was off. Sometimes I could control the radio stations and volume with the steering wheel buttons that control them though. When I turned it into the dealership at first though, they did tell me that it was possibly an update issue but just to make sure, they would go ahead and take the appropriate steps to diagnose the source of the cause. The technician (not the help desk) had to call GM over the phone himself to ask for a replacement of the HMI module. Apparently, this was a part that had to be approved for order by the dealership's manager as well. Thankfully though, it all went smoothly. When the part arrived, they said they had it installed the same day. I don't like the waiting game, but I am grateful for a functioning radio display that allows me to use my backup camera when I need it instead of having to hope for it to turn on when I go in reverse. Bluetooth works as good as new, I have control of the display functions again, and all my radio stations remained intact as well, lol :)
