Paint Quality / Chips & Flaws

Anyone getting a lot of paint chips on their hood? Some of mine are pretty big and spread out. Are they putting cheap paint on these new trucks now or what? My 2002 Yukon XL with 160,000 miles on it has less paint chips than my 2014 Sierra with 1700 miles on it. Thoughts?

its water based paint. due to stricter EPA restrictions. they are typically weaker than the old oil based paints.

 

My 2011 F150 had lots of front end chips after only 7 months.

 

My 2014 hasn't been clean enough to notice any chips though from all the salt though.

Do you have a bug deflector? It helps

First thing I purchased is a bug deflector, as well as paint protection film

First truck I was thinking of not putting a bug deflector on....maybe I should.

I had a few very small chips on it when I picked it up from the dealers. I'm thinking it was caused on the rail car . I purchased touch up paint the next day. Touch up paint use to come with a new truck .Not no more ..... I did put on a GM hood protector when the truck came in . It's low profile and looks good on the truck . No chips on the hood so far.

Touch up came with a new truck? What yr was this? Had to be prior to the gmt800s which is what 15 yrs? Probably offered by the specific dealer?

I agree. But you know GM tries to pinch their pennies....

No touch up paint. I bought it at the dealer. I think it was 12.00....

Part of that problem is water based paint requires a more temperature controlled environment to cure. Couple that with the fact that it takes longer for water based paint to dry vs the old oil based paint. It would slow down the assembly line to do the proper paint job we all want....lost production = lost sales. GM isn't the only manufacturer skimping on paint.....ahem Toyota. Im more concerned with the lack of QA in the Silao plant with paint flaws among other things. Hopefully GM ratchets down on that.

Update: GMC is paying to have a body shop repaint my hood. Not only is the top of the hood flawed, but the underside is starting to flake away from what appears to be some sort of sealer that was not cleaned off before painting.

Sadly this is true. My Subaru and Toyota had lousy paint too.
