I spent several weeks on this forum deciding what wheel and tire combo for new 2016 5.3L LS and went with 20x9 MotoMetal 970's +18 offset with Nitto Grappler G2 305/55-20's (the lighter LT version) after installing Bilstein 5100's at highest (1.85") adjustment to level front as opposed to going with cheaper level kits that can potentially cause front end suspension premature wear. I've run over 1000 miles and tested full lock on both sides in both forward and reverse. I can positively tell you this configuration is unbeatable! No rub (I did tie back the inside of the rear wheel liners to get about 3/4" more space at closest point). Ride with 40lbs in tires is excellent. Tires are very quiet, no tire road noise in cab at any speed, very quiet with windows down as well.

I'm torn between the Toyo RT and the Nitto Ridge Grappler as of late. Like, the design of the Toyo really catches my eye, but the siping of the Nitto gives me the impression that it'd probably be a slightly "safer" tire in wet conditions. Trying to shop by price really hasn't helped me much, as there is only a $10-20 difference for a set. I know there aren't many people running the Ridge Grapplers yet but what would y'all's take on my "dilemma"?

By now you may have already made a decision. I was in your shoes not long ago. I choose the Ridge Grapplers because I knew not many people had them. Actually I think I was one of the first on this site to run them.

I really like them, they perform great and they look really aggressive. I'm very happy with them.

Is your truck 2WD? I am wondering because I have a similar setup (20x10 -24 fuel nutz w/ 305/55 mud terrains) and I barely rubbed in reverse before I did any trimming. After I trimmed the plastic and zip tied the fender liners back, no rubbing at all.

Regardless, that combo looks awesome on black. I almost went with the same wheels but a friend of mine got them on her dodge so I picked something else.

My truck is 2wd.,When I pull back felt, full turn lock, my tire barely cleared the metal. On mine zip tie wouldn't have done much. I was stuck between the Fuel Maverick D538 (black with machine accent) & D537 (machine face with black lip. Went with 538 and just ordered some Anzo ubar headlights in black. Will be putting HID bulbs in low beams. Swapping out my all chrome grill for chrome with black overlay and black bow tie. Ill be switching out the gold tail gate bow tie to black as well. (the little things, ha). Choosing these black rims gave me a few more ideas. I'll post a pic when installed.

Boltman,

I would do some research before installing HID bulbs that you don't melt your lenses.

The Anzo are already setup with H7 but lots of reviews say they aren't very bright. Just doing a swap (pug and play) to better ones. Several videos on YouTube have guys doing it on those headlights. I'll definitely research some more in regards to that happening. Thanks for the heads up.

I honestly haven't yet. I don't intend to purchase tires until late summer/early fall, but I'd like to have a concrete decision before then. It's definitely not urgent at all, but I'd rather do the "research" early. I assume you have the 5.3? How much (if any) would you say the drive train has to work to get the 12 ply f-rated tire to get moving??

Anyone on here running any 305/65/18 tires?

Wondering how they fit.

Jlm02a3094 does. He has a BDS 4" lift with the FOX upgrade. 305/65/18 BFG KO2 wrapped around Fuel Cleavers with -12 offset. States there is minor rubbing. He did not trim anything.

spurshot runs 305/60/18 on a 1.5 level with no rubbing. Cooper ST Maxx tires on OEM wheels.

I do have the 5.3. I wouldn't say I noticed any stress on the truck when I switched tires.

My gas mileage is another story, I now average about 16 mpg. I was getting closer to 19 mpg stock pre level and 33" tires.

I'm not complaining, I'm very happy with my truck.

I may be wrong but i think spurshot is running 305/60/18s

Cooper doesnt make a 305/65 in that size.

I thought about the 305/60's but want the extra height of the 65s

I'm only on a level though, so Just wondering if anyone has run these yet with just a level.

    • I tried tapping it.  This might sound like a dumb question, you should feel vibration or some type of noise when it turns on? Can someone please verify? Thank you all!
    • I feel better now for my own view point and actions or lack there of towards the dealership service theme reading your post and others. GM corporate is who offers the two free oil changes on the HD trucks and I bought my truck in Feb of 2025 and those oil change offers run out within 2 years I believe and I highly doubt I will be using either one of them. I had asked if I could officially give those free services to another customer ( a friend ) and they said no, its all a GM corporate thing based on the vehicle in question. What that service advisor did however was go into a little story about how such and such customer was denied engine warranty because he had done his own oil changes because then they are not documented ... you see where that goes and so an employee playing the game of scaring the customer into having the service work done there most certainly triggered my thought process. At a later date I did talk to the person who handles warranty claims at the dealership and she said to be sure to document the oil changes and keep receipts for the oil and filter ( coped the receipts from cases of Mobil oil and case of filters I bought from them ) and the vehicles VIN, the date of service, mileage etc and staple that together as a record I would give them if that was ever needed and I keep my own log book for services for each vehicle as well. Oh and about 8 months after I bought the truck the dealer starts calling me to offer a maintenance service since they haven't seen my vehicle show up on their system ... for the mere fee of 300.00 Canadian to change the oil and rotate the tires and a few other minor checks and I declined the offer, I get the call again a couple of months later for the same thing and she could tell I was not interested and she asked if they should take my name off the call list and I said yes, do that !.    By the way did you happen to keep your factory oil filter to open it up and see the surprises inside as I expect some will show up as per the odd little sliver of metal shaving and particles that the filter does trap along with bits of grey silicone sealer that come off of the inside edge of mating surfaces. I have cut open every filter so far on my truck although few miles but have changed the oil often and the second filter was vastly better with very little of anything, that first filter was the unsettling one as I expected it would be.
    • I get why they do this…but man…not ideal. I only extract on inboard boat engines because the drains are buried and even then I hate it because it’s easy to leave a quart behind with that method.   They should market it as an “oil refresh” not oil change!
    • I only get oil changed where I can watch. Valvoline pulls through the dipstick into a see thru glass. When done they show me the dipstick. About the only way they can mess up is using the wrong oil. But that secret wouldn’t stay secret long. Honda uses TQ wrenches on everything. You can watch through a plate glass window. Discount tires does that with tires. Trust but verify.
    • I would not argue that with you. It would be pointless to argue against the truth and you speak the truth.    My question and in fact the entire point of this thread is an exploration into the levers of wear which happens no matter how well we maintain our powertrains.    Some of these levers we exert a good deal of influence over which can and do result is lower wear, longer powertrain life. Some others we are sort of stuck with.    An engine is typically done when the ring to bore seal no longer is able to do the job effectively. Normally the first thing to go in a engine otherwise well maintained and adult driven is this seal.    Looking into the means, methods, products and attitudes that influence the rate of wear seems a worthwhile inquiry to me.
