OEM Brake Controller

Does anyone have a guide on how to add an OEM Trailer Brake Controller? I'm assuming there maybe a link to a similar post that exists. I realize the Max Trailer Package could not likely be installed and I'm not interested in that. Thanks for any help

Does anyone have an aftermarket brake controller that looks and functions well they would recommend?

If my truck is a JL1, then isn't it possible to add the GM OEM Brake Controller? How do I determine if my truck is JL1?

JL1 is an RPO code you can find on the sticker inside your glove box. But if you had the JL1 code you'd also have the brake controller.

Buy the Tekonsha P3 and be done with it

As said, if you have the JL1 trailer package you would have the controller. Your only options is after market, GM will send you the harness for free I believe.

I don't even know why a trailer brake controller isn't standard today on even the most basic trucks. Mine does not have one either and it pisses me off I need to go through the trouble of installing something that should be as OEM on a truck as a set of Tires!

No one offers it as standard. I specifically sought out my 2011 in part because it had the controller and I'll do the same when it comes time to buy the new truck next year.

I feel if you get/order the "trailering package" the wiring etc. should be there to install the original OEM brake controller later. The cut out is already in the dash and they do provide wiring but why can't it be set up to install the OEM brake controller. It just doesn't make sense. This would be a way for GM to make additional money after the truck is purchased in parts and labor.

OEM brake controller cannot be added, it uses much more than the simple aftermarket hookup.

I know you can't install the OEM brake control if you do not have it (JL1) but GM should have the necessary wiring etc. it in place if you decide to but in an OEM brake control later. Especially if you order the "trailering package". Most of the vehicles on the dealer's lots don't have it or the vehicles are delivered without the OEM brake controller. The slight cost difference could be added into the trailering package. It should be a plug and play option.

This would be my vote, especially since that's what I have. Easy to install (4 wires) and I mounted on the knee bolster under the steering wheel.
