Gouged rims

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I had bfg all terrains put on my truck Monday. Yesterday when cleaning the tires I noticed that all 4 of my rims are gouged. Not badly, not in a noticeable spot but I am worried they'll corrode. Anyone have any opinions? I know they'll argue me when I go up after work.

Looks like a "rash" from letting them hit the floor while mounting. There are companies that specialize in repairing alloy wheels, Google wheel repair for your area. If that is the worst gouge they can probably buff that out real quick.

On the 2014 rims I have the wheel weights are on the inter part of the rim. I read online someone was able to get belle tire to have their wheels refinished in that area and were given loaner wheels in the mean time so I am hoping for the best. If not I will for sure argue it since the trucks brand new and I'm pretty sure this will cause rim corrosion down the line.

They are supposed to use coated tools for these aluminum rims too. I would be all up in their stuff about that. One of these Michigan winters with all the salt/brine! Once that stuff finds a way under your clear coat, you'll never get rid of it.

What's the load range of the BFG's and what is your rim size? I want to put them on my truck but for 18" rims they're only available in Load Range E. I was curious if yours were 18" rims with load range E and what you thought of the ride quality after installing them.

That isn't bad at all. Clean the area real good with some 409 or something.. then Very light sandpaper and water. I have hit my AT wheels a few times.. the above works great. However, one time I rashed it real bad.. that required some special love from the wheel repair man.

Maybe if you live in Florida, but we live in Michigan, where they use 22.9 tons of salt per lane mile annually. One winter's worth of that getting under his clearcoat it looks like migrating worms of corrosion. Once it starts, game over.

Not a pretty sight!

Not to worry. That inst too bad a gouge. Should be fine.

Truck looks really sharp with the BFG's and level.

Yeah I would complain to the tire store and make them repair it, take it from someone who didn't years ago who now needs his rims completely refinished because of not only sloppy tire changers but also because of rim weights that eat away the clear coating. Once they fix my rims I'm making sure they use wheel weights inside the rims and not outside.

You can also use the adhesive type wheel weights the rims. The rims on my Camaro are 28 years old. Still look like new. Just make sure they use coated tools when changing the tires. I have to remove the tires from the rims just to rotate them. Designated front and rear rims with directional tires. Then rebalance them all.

Make them make it right, so maybe the next guy don't end up with the same thing.

Thanks guys for the replies, and thank you fellow Michiganders, no one else quite understands the salt belt states and what it does to cars. Here's the verdict, The manager tried to lie to me. Said it was from the alignment machine, which it was. But he said there was no other way to do it since they don't have flanges on my rims. I said there had to be a better way and he said there ain't. Then proceeded to show me in the back how they put the mirror tools on them, as he did that another employee who had no idea what was going on said "fort gratiot has the ones that go on the wheels", manager just looked at him and like shook his head. Then he said "that's the first I've heard of that, if you want we will have them refinished". Lol knew he had no choice since he lied.

Mine are load range E. So far I love them. If I start going above 85 on the express way there is a shake though. At normal speeds it's slightly more rough but nothing too crazy. I would say Forsure get them!

Tire place got mine the other day as well. Messed up 3 of the 4 and broke my center caps. I went back up there the next day and he said "Well hell, how did we miss the 4th one". They are going to try to repair the 3 and if I am not happy they are buying me new wheels. Looks like the same thing that happened to yours. The Teflon pads in the rim holders for the mounting machine were worn out.
