Front rims get very hot rear stay cool

This morning I was creeping through a parking lot with ok radio and windows down (I have no idea why I was creeping like weirdo, but....) I thought I heard the brakes dragging from the P/S Front. I'll check it again once I take lunch.

...It's probably me just hearing stuff after I read someone say brakes may be dragging.

Wheels and tires have nothing to do with heat generation or retention in the brakes.

Except for the fact that rotors get hot and since the rims are bolted directly to the rotors, the heat is transferred from one metal to another. Basic thermodynamics.

Do you use the parking brake? Is it electric actuator to apply/release like some cars?

I'm having parking brake release issues on my car - when it doesn't release fully, the rims get hot, otherwise they are cool to the touch.

The parking brake always works on the rear wheels, except for some large behicles that have the parking brake on the main driveshaft.

If they are getting so hot you can't keep your hand on them then I would get a dealer to look at it. Like someone said maybe stabilitrak actuatin your brakes. On my older truck after the calipers seized a couple times and the rims got so hot the coating on them started to peel right around the center of the rim.

Yea, I am the one that said that.

The 1st time I took it to the dealer the brakes had locked up on me and I got a check engine light. Dealer was ready and willing to check it out. They duplicated the rims getting hot, cleared numerous faults and the check engine light but said they drove it and the rims weren't getting hot anymore.

I drove it and after a few days the front rims started getting very hot again but I didn't have a check eng light.

This time the dealer said they couldn't find anything wrong, so I said "your telling me that the front rims are suppose to get so hot that I can cook an egg on them" they said "we have drove it and put it on the lift and can't find anything wrong"...........

I disconnected the battery for 1 hour, problem is gone for now but I am pretty sure it will return, every time I have done this it returns after a long drive.

Ok - you got me. Maybe I should have been more specific that the wheels are not generating heat. Oh wait - that's exactly what I said.

My tire pressure climbs 3-4 psi per tire while driving in This summer weather. 3 on the backs, 4 on the fronts, from a cold 37 psi.

I just made a 80 mile round trip this afternoon, and all 4 rotors were actually cool to the touch when I shut her down. The fronts might have been about body temp at the most.

I let the engine (Jake Brake) do most of my breaking when possible.

I have the GMC with the 18" aluminum rims, which probably lets more air flow over and around the rotors.

You probably have sticky brakes, or warped rotors, but don't rule out bad wheel bearings. If they are getting that hot, the grease might have been compromised at this point?

If your rotors are super hot and you run through a water puddle, that can warp rotors. It don't take much, then the problem compounds itself. More friction = more heat.

Thanks for the info. I disconnected my battery for an hour and it seems to be gone now but I am sure it will return, It has both of the other times that I did this. Probably stabiltrack or abs acting up.

Grrrrrrr............front brakes are dragging again, loss of power and rims getting very hot again. I got to find time to get to another dealer.

Pull your ABS fuse and see if the problem goes away.

Pull it and leave it out, correct? Do you think it will trigger a check engine light? Any idea if there is a fuse for stabiltrack?

It WILL set a code, but you'll still drive the same and stop ok, just without anti-lock. Check your manual for the stabilitrac fuse.

Ok, I will try it, thanks

I see 2 fuses for abs, ABS Pump fuse # 3 and ABS Valves # 25. Should I pull them both? I don't see anything for the stabiltrack.
