Off roading 2wd

OP, instead of a 3 inch that will throw your angles off, why not a 2.5 and a body lift? You can easily fit 33s or even 34" tires without going too crazy on suspension. My truck is a 2wd and this is what I did. It will probably never see heavy off-roading. Just the occassional dirt road or pasture. Nobody even asks me if it's 4wd because most see the Z71 assume it is. And if they do ask me why I lifted a 2wd, I'll honestly tell them it's for looks, doesn't bother me one bit. But I do agree with others in the sense that putting some meatier tires on your truck is going to be pushing it with the V6 and also doing anything more than the occassional small mudhole will get you in trouble. As long as you have someone out there to help pull you out, you should be ok. Hey man, it's your truck, do what you like.

Yeah, 4x4 in a truck is def marked up.... but it also holds the value a little better, too.

I don't know what's worse GM making a Z71 2WD or somebody buying it! No offense man I realize it's your truck, but seriously what is the point in paying the $3k premium for Z71 when it's not 4 wheel drive? Z71 is almost a waste of money in 4WD variants save for the hill descent control but the skid plates are plastic and the shocks are garbage....neither give me any confidence and I'll be replacing the shocks as soon as Bilsteins become available. I feel like your money would have been better spent getting a non-Z71 4x4 that probably would have been the same price.

 

And do you want to tell me why I should have bought a 4wd when I don't need a 4wd? Seems to me that's just one more component that can wear out and need replacing (4wd transfer case went out TWICE in my 2002 Sierra). Also mind telling me where I can get a non-Z71 4x4 for $33k that has all the options mine has (bucket seats, 8" infotainment screen, crew cab)?

You'd be surprised how far good tires will get you in a 2WD. The guy behind me made it all the way to the ditch before I had to come pull him out. A lot of it is knowing how to drive.

So by your logic, I should have passed up buying this Z71 for $33k since it's not 4wd and should have found a non-Z71 2wd (for more $) just because I can't use it as designed? I didn't set out to buy a Z71, it just happened to be a good deal sitting on the lot. Not going to pass it up just because it's Z71 and not 4wd and "oh noes, what will close minded people on internet think?!?!"

Anyways i was orginally lookimg at http://www.roughcountry.com/gm-suspension-lift-kit-271-84.html but seeing the body lift i like it and think it would raise me high enough to not worry about clearence issues. Im not going to go serious off roading i spent way to much to be doing that. I will be driving on the trails to get back to the campsites and unload the atvs thats about all. So maybe a body lift , 20s, and what kind of tire i do like the aggresive look but like what was mentioned i dont need overly aggresive. Just enough to say shes not stock

when i bought my 14 1500 v6 2wd , 8 in screen crew cab, all star package with spray in liner and the paint protection ( regretting paint protection i think idk lol ) i paid 33 otd after tax... the same 4wd model was going to be 40 otd there is no way im going to spend almost a years salary lol im a poor college kid lol now im sad no 4x4 but i really dont think il miss it

Just level it.. Body lifts are junk.. Way easier to level it. With a body lift you are only lifting the body, the frame and everything below it stay in place so technically your not gaining any height, with a leveling kit you actually gain 2 to 3 inches in the front, and you will gain a little bit more with 33's

 

And leveling kits are dirt cheap

Lol ok big city go jack that bad boy up put some 33's on it and impress all the city kids. Come up north and take it out in the with it get it stuck and watch as we laugh and drive on by. I wasent trying too be a jerk but you took it that way and your big city attitude shined threw. Do whatever makes you happy and enjoy it just remember the advise I gave you when you get alittle too deep and your stuck.

 

I've gotten very very very stuck in my lifted z71 (4wd). Took a buddy and his f250 (also 4wd) and about 20 minutes and lots of gas and diesel to get me out, and a case of beer for him for doing so...

 

Point is, even lifted 4x4's with big grippy tired get stuck, maybe not as easily as 2wd, but when 4x4's get stuck they usually GET STUCK.

 

That said I've got a 2wd now, I realized I've grown out of offroading and I could save like 5g's because of it, and realizing the only time I ever used 4wd was because I wanted too do something dumb.

 

I say put a small lift on your truck if you want to. I wouldn't do it simply due to the fact gas mileage would suffer, but that and ride quality are what matter to me personally.
