Off roading 2wd

So not that i am a hardcore off roader no rock climbing in the new truck wouldnt mind getting it muddy. I have a 14 1500 4.3 2wd with locking diff. I love it but can i get it muddy or am i asking for trouble, I think before i do anything i need at least a 3 in lift and better tires. Would i be fine with light off roading ... Trying not to regret not buying a 4x4 but they wanted way to much money . Im coming from a mustang and i love the truck alot more most days so far

Don't think for a moment that it's going to be a satisfying ride in the mud. The biggest problem is anything you do to the truck is going to make it worse off-road, especially if you have the taller rear end gears (3.08 / 3.23). If you get bigger tires, its going to bog the v6 down even more, add in some sticky mud and it will just get worse. I have a 2wd with the locking diff as well, and the mindset of the features is that they are there to get me out of a surprise tough situation, not to get me into one for the fun of it.

Lift and bigger tires won't help you in mud. I have been in vehicles with big ol tires and it's a waste for mud. Narrower tires seem to dig better. Big tires are for rivers, rocks and sand IMO. You'd be best off in mud with a quality mud tire in the stock size.

ya not mudding but maybe just some trails... now my stomach hurts but i really couldnt afford the 4x4 i think i should just be happy with a nice 4x2 i already hauled my atv with no issues maybe just a small lift with 33s and call it a day

I would have to tastefully disagree with you. With a wide tire you have a larger foot print which disperses the weight of you vehicle over lets say 10" of tire instead of 7" of tire. So with a narrower tire you put more pressure down in one spot of mud. While in theory you think you want your tires to dig, is some mud, especially down here in Texas that narrow tire will only make you get stuck faster. If narrow tires have worked for you in the past, great keep going with them as your application is probably different that mine however, in my own personal opinion a wider tire will serve you better overall in the mud.

 

To the OP I had a 2wd gmt-800 with bfg 285 70 17 and they were great in the mud however, if you got into any mud that was serious you don't stand a chance. in 2wd trucks you cannot climb any kind of incline without momentum. If you are going to "play" in the mud make sure you have a buddy with 4wd on stand by. The locker will help a little bit but if there is a crown on the muddy road the locker will actually hurt you causing your to slide one way or the other off the road.

Well with the money your fixing to sink in the 2wd with a lift and tires you could have used that money to get the same truck but in 4wd.

ya no serious mudding like that just trials and some puddles just more worried about winter but i look at the truck and say damn it looks good prob better with 4x4 but didn't have the money guess the next 3-4 years il be sandbagging it and some snow tires lol but heard the g80 does help a lot to in snow guess il see

Never lift a 2 wheel drive pry th dumbest thing I've seen next too a set of stacks on the bed of a truck. Ride the quad and be happy no point in destroying a new truck.

Wide tires help in the mud but they make driving in the snow worse. I wouldn't go mudding with a 2wd but if you want to, have fun!

A lift on a 2 wheel drive looks dumb it's completely pointless. It's like making a 4 wheel drive a low rider laying rocker panels or a mustang a monster truck.

Not hating got my all terrain I paid cash for. Maybe I'll buy a snowmobile and make a dirt bike out of it.
