2014 Silverado air bag removal

I started a thread about color matching the emblem on the steering wheel. I think I'm just going to use plastidip. But, I would want to remove the airbag assembly so I don't get any overspray inside the truck. I can't find anywhere (even YouTube) on how to remove the airbag from the wheel.

Has anybody done this or know someone who has?

I know the gens before just had a hole or 2 where you can stick something in them to unhook the airbag, but I don't see anything like that on the 2014s. I've looked and felt all around for something and can't find anything. I'm scared to just pull it away from the wheel from either the top or bottom because my luck it will break a clip or something. I guess my last resort would be to go to the dealer and ask one of the techs, but I hope I won't have to do that.

Thanks

I understand your over spray concern. Have you thought about using a two liter bottle or milk jug cut down? Heck you could even use a cardboard box. Any thing thats about a foot long. Try it somewhere away from your truck first to see if you like it, its way easier then taking the airbag out.

Thanks for the idea. I ordered a small vinyl sample to try first and I couldn't get it how I wanted it so I guess I'll try plastidip next. If I could pop the emblem insert out I'd just use paint made for plastic, but it has a chrome trim that stick above the insert and I tried with a plastic razor blade and couldn't get it to work. I know plastidip can easily come off but I don't want to think about trying to go through the whole interior looking for overspray lol. Too bad the only place around here I found plastidip doesn't have glossifier so hopefully it won't look too flat.

Plasti dip over spray is hard to get off. It only peels of easy when there are multiple layers.

How many coats would you suggest? I wouldn't think it would be many just for a steering wheel emblem.

At least 2-3 coats. I like the little paint booth idea and I know my buddy did this to his mustang. Go thick with the first coat just dont get it runny. The more coats the easier it peels off.

Well I don't plan on peeling it off unless I screw up somehow. I've seen vids where somebody used plastidip and showing how good it last. I'm not too worried about it chipping since that's not a part of the wheel that your hand touches and it's not going to be in direct sunlight like the outside of the truck is.I may just do 3, maybe 4, and see how it looks. I may find some glossifier, do I add that last, or between a couple of the black coats? I may need to look that up to.
