87 Octane in 6.2L

Exactly... Almost none of these engines are using there full potential. Its not like we are running laps at nascar or wide open down the dragstrip. And by the way I run only 87 in my RZR 1000 as that's what is recommended and that is a little higher performance than the 6.2L in the truck.

You need the proper octane to match the engines design or modification. If it calls for higher octane, use it to ensure the longevity of the engine.

 

If it pings,knocks,detonates enough you can break piston rings, crack pistons, bend rods or deform the cylinder walls.

i bet you could run a 6.2 on 87 octane for 200k miles and have no issues.

As long as your not making hot laps in it. If your drive like grandpa then 87 will work but most people with a 6.2 got it to either tow or go. So 91 or higher makes since. And it's only a few bucks more for a little extra insurance.

I'm pretty sure my owner's manual said that if I didn't run premium gas I'd void my warranty...

i don't believe thats something they could prove honestly. and if you even told them, i doubt it would stand up in court.

I drove a new 6.2 today that was filled with 87 octane and just reving it up in park it would spark knock, pretty much tells the story...

For all vehicles except those with
the 6.2L V8 engine, use regular
unleaded gasoline meeting ASTM
specification D4814 with a posted
octane rating of 87 or higher. Do not
use gasoline with an octane rating
below 87, as it may cause engine
damage and will lower fuel
economy.
If the vehicle has the 6.2L V8 engine
(VIN Code J), use premium
unleaded gasoline meeting ASTM
specification D4814 with a posted
octane rating of 91 or higher.
Regular unleaded gasoline rated at
87 octane or higher can be used,
but acceleration and fuel economy
will be reduced, and an audible
knocking noise may be heard. If this
occurs, use a gasoline rated at
91 octane or higher as soon as
possible. Otherwise, the engine
could be damaged. If heavy
knocking is heard when using
gasoline with a 91 octane rating or
higher, the engine needs service.

this is a discussion about CAN you, not SHOULD you. You can, and it will not void your warranty based on that sentence....

A friend of mine and I each bought 2014 Sierra SLTs with the 6.2L engine and we compared owner's manuals.

Both of them specifically stated that if the vehicle is equipped with the 6.2L engine (J code) that 91+ octane MUST be used or engine damage can occur. In the event that happens it could void your warranty.

I'll post the text from the manual tomorrow.

Here's the same piece from the 2014 manual -- it also says 'Regular unleaded gasoline rated at

87 octane or higher can be used'
Talks about reduced performance, but not voided warranty.

If the vehicle has a yellow fuel cap,
E85 or FlexFuel can be used in the
vehicle. See E85 or FlexFuel on
page 9-70.

audible knocking noise may be

This was for my February 2014 build and my friends truck purchased three weeks ago, I don't know its build date.

I wonder if the conflicting information is brand dependent. ie. The Chevrolet manual says one thing but the GMC manual says another.

 

My truck's at the dealer today on another issue and I brought the fuel question up to my salesperson. He stated that it's there understanding that ALL of the vehicles they sell will run fine on 87 octane. I didn't ask if that also applied to the Corvette or the Camaro.

 

He went in back and asked the service department and their people had no definitive answers either but they did say that they don't typically test the fuel when they have a vehicle needing engine warranty work.

My 14 gmc SLT allows has the reduced performance comment in its manual - built in July.. Regardless I've run the 91+

    • This is exactly the reason our EV has consumed so much of my driving. I don't want to fire up a cold diesel or gas engine just to drive 2 miles up to the store. It's arguably terrible for an engine. If I'm not driving at least 10 miles and don't need to do truck things, the truck stays parked.   Enter the EV. It's immediately heating or cooling the cabin as needed (heat pump). An engine doesn't need to warm up or be driven gently. I can tear off in it with ZERO guilt. Move the car 1/4 mile from store to store and not think "gee, I'm short-cycling a lukewarm engine".   It doesn't idle in a drive-through. Doesn't idle at stop lights. (OK, neither would the diesel, if I let stop-start have its way, but I don't).   Even moving it out of the garage to wash it... HA! It doesn't need to be started just to move 40 feet. I have cars that I will actually put in neutral and push (no start) in/out of the garage or shop if they absolutely HAVE to be moved. My nice Camaros.

    • I traced the atf cooling system in my 1500 and it comes out of the transmission, into the bar/plate liquid/liquid heat exchanger, as stated above.  Then it crosses over to the external thermostat/bypass and then  to the aux cooler in front of the main radiator.  Hence, on this routing, the PPE thermostat bypass eliminator is an $85 piece of bling that does nothing for reducing atf temps on this truck.  I think I'll temporarily clamp a needle nose vise grip on the coolant feed hose to the bar/plate cooler and see how much the atf temp drops.  With the use of ULV trans fluid, I'm not convinced running the trans cooler than OEM spec is going to be detrimental to the life of the transmission.    I found this interesting on the Dana/Long site stating that they make transmission cooling/heating bar plate heat exchangers.  I worked with Dana/Long on a few projects when I was at the gas powered fun factory. https://www.dana.co.jp/downloads/PTG/Long/Dana_TOC_SpecSht.pdf  Bar plate heat exchangers are just a stack of stamped parallel path fluid channels, assembled and vacuum furnace brazed to make the final assembly.  Want more cooling/heating, just stack more plates until you run out of package space.   Anyway, thanks for the info, much appreciated.
    • I have thought an EV might have some practical value in extending the life of the ICE members of ones fleet. Now....I'm convinced of it. I've been letting my better half access Raven (Mitsubishi Mirage) for her needs while Dizzy has been in the shop. Being the fuel freak I am and given the fact Raven is capable of over 60 mpg in clean air on a warm day I was taken back by the wife's ability to take a car that had used a half a tank of gas that to that point had returned a value of 57 mpg and return in with a decimating 51 mpg for that same tank in that same day in a 15 mile round trip of short hop errands and a stop in the drive through at Micky D's.  😱   Trust me on this. It would take the remainder of that tank driven on the highway to return that tank to just 54 mpg. This is not a Mitsubishi issue. This is an ICE issue that is magnified in vehicles capable of such high fuel economy values. On a percentage basis your 1500 does the same thing. Short hopping an ICE consumes a good deal more fuel and in doing so provides zero additional useable outputs. That entire volume of fuel is wasted in diluting the cylinder walls oil films, creating crankcase moisture and acid content and the resultant wear.    Enter the SLATE. All of that is avoided and the ICE's advantage in range and made useful at reduced wear for your ICE!   Kind'a cool.
