you'll get taken to the woodshed on this forum for running 87/89 in your 6.2

 

i ran 87 for 5,000 miles with no problems. i just started running 93 because the owners manual says basically you must run it, and i figured if i had any warranty claims i better not have it denied due to something so stupid.

 

That's because it's not the proper fuel for that engine and compression ratio. Running lower grade fuel is not a good idea and will cause damage over the long run. You may not always hear the 'pinging' but it's there when running the lower octane fuel.

For the price of these trucks, you should want to use the proper fuel. It's only a few dollars difference when filling the tank.

I have been in various places out west, Lake City, Colorado comes to mind, that has nothing better than 87, and it may not have been but 85. So wanting to know how the truck is affected by lower octane ratings is not always about saving money on gas. Any of you live where it's difficult to get the right stuff? Consequences? Strategies?

Well if you're in a pinch there are ways to turn that 87 junk into a higher octane fuel. Toluene and xylene are two effective octane boosters along with ethanol. The blending ratios are easy to find online.

 

If you find a little airport that's willing to help you out, mixing a little aviation fuel in with 85/87 would help too.

 

Obviously theses aren't long term solutions and pretty expensive. It would be a huge waste to buy a 6.2 and not have atleast SOME source of 91.

Several of these guys running 87 in their 6.2 did not know what they were buying and did no homework so now those tight asses won't fork over a couple extra bucks at the pump and are trying to justify it by chiming in here with bs that has no bearing on these engines and basically the same knowledge they had of their truck when they purchase it.

I see we got people in here that say their 8N tractor runs fine on 87 so this truck will be fine because their tractor has drug a box blade for 65 years ( should a kept your old International truck) We got guys listening to their service guys and my service guy told me my 15-6.2 didn't have an 8speed in it. Do what you guys want, I see what goes on in the ECU every time I tune on them and they detonate on 91, although minor, it's still going on. Will it run on 87? Yes... But hey, it's your truck.

8N tractor? Lol, you're dating yourself. Not many folks, except dome of us old dogs, even know what an 8N is. Learned to drive when I was about ten on my grandfathers farm driving one. Good memories btw, what was the compression ratio on them, maybe 7.5 ~ 8.0 : 1 ?

I was friends with a guy that could get years out of a engine that rattle. To get behind him was brutal. Running 87 in a 6.2 would cause no damage.

Interesting post, I never knew that the 6.2L was supposed to have 91 or higher octane.
