E85 Gas gets more HP...wow

I have run E85 98% of the time for 5 years (over 3 yrs exclusively E85) and haven't had any additional maintenance whatsoever

I would suggest running a few tanks not switching back and forth as the truck will not "get used to it". Takes a few tanks to flush too. Switching back and forth won't hurt anything

I used e85 fuel almost exclusively the first two years I had it, but back then I had a station selling it just 11 miles away. Now it's more like 30 miles to an e85 station, but since my closest Home Depot is also there I always fill it up. Even if the cost-per-mile isn't in your favor, it is still a better product than dirty gasoline. Runs cooler, cleaner and it's American made....can't go wrong there!

Just E10 messes up the carburators on small engines, and why I have no trust in Ethanol. Something I would like to trust, but don't at this point. I live in thhe land of corn and soybeans. I do like the idea that my truck can burn E85 if I need to.

I hear that E-10 will harm carbs and other parts on small engines all the time. A guy I know preaches the harm it will do and how the politicians are forcing us to ruin our vehicles. Ironically I ride Harleys and one has a 45 mm Mikuni carburetor. In Colorado we get E-10 all year long and my carb still hasn't corroded and performs flawlessly on my highly modded engine. I guess something must be wrong with me. I hear all these horror stories about ethanol, run E-10 in my bikes, and E-85 in my truck and they run great. No issues at all, nor have the guys I ride with. The only negative I've experienced with E-10 is a small decrease in mileage.

I definitely like the "made in America" aspect of E85.

What do you think the combine that picks the corn runs on? What do you think the discing/planting tractor runs on? Or the truck that hauls it to the plant? Or the pivot that pumps the 700 gallons of water per bushel of corn produced? All foreign oil.

Eh, you can make that argument about anything though. (E.G. Where do you think they get the oil to make the plastic parts in your Chevy truck? GM doesn't weave the seats at the assembly plant, where to they get the gas to ship the seat covers?")

 

I'm just glad the main component of the manufacturing process is from American farmers, and it's manufactured here by American workers. Drive a Chevy truck, a Dodge Challenger, and Alumacraft boat for the same reasons. My dad grew up on a farm, my mom and her siblings still own a little farmland.

The parts on your Harley are probably OK for E10 as motorcycle/car/now boat motor makers are aware of the E10, and have been for a while.

 

The main danger is with smaller engines, especially ones that sit long enough for the gas and oil to separate.

I understand how you're thinking, but about 40% of the corn crop goes to ethanol. If that ground was used for wheat or beans, it could bring food prices down, or even raise hay, making milk and beef cheaper. Another thing to consider is water use and erosion. Other crops are more "erosion efficient" than corn.

The parts on your Harley are probably OK for E10 as motorcycle/car/now boat motor makers are aware of the E10, and have been for a while.

I run E-10 in my lawnmower in the summer and snow blower in the winter. It's all that's available around here. No problems yet. Could it be that the sky really isn't falling?

E10 killed my snowblower, weed whacker, and nearly killed my carb on my quad before I caught on to what was causing it. These are all older, well cared for, except for the gas. If your equipment is newer, they may be designed to take it?

 

Michigan does not have to post that gas has ethanol in it at the pump. Some do, but if you ask the attendant, they look at you like you have 3 heads.

 

Whenever I use my old '51 Super "C", my quad, my snowblower, or any small engine with a fuel shut off, I run them out of gas if they will not be used within a week or two. You don't want to leave that stuff sitting in your carb for any length of time.

 

So yeah, it's hard for me to even think about trusting E85, even though our trucks are supposedly "made for it".

There is a lot of mis-information out there about e85 fuel....mostly spread by big oil. Research and make up your own minds!

The only negative I've experienced with E-10 is a small decrease in mileage.[/quote)in my experience the ethonol doesn't seem to hurt anything and I have no problem running it in my carbureted Harley's and in my lawn mowers generators etc,I just make sure if they are going to be sitting for any length of time I drain the carb or run them out of gas because that stuff will make a mess of a carb in short order when left to sit.

    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?   
    • Do you think this width might affect the chalk test with a higher pressure closer to 65psi? I think lowering the pressure makes sense to get the tread to lay flatter
