2015 Sierra Denali HD still with 6.0 w/6 speed

Since the 6.2 and the 8 speed are offered in the 1500 series, wonder why they're not available in the HD series? Just a thought.

The 6.2 is all aluminum block and could never go in the HD's, although we would like it too. The 6.0 is iron block, and has proven over 10yrs to be a very good workhorse. My guess is GM will update the 6.0 with direct injection which will improve it significantly.

Iron block, cheaper to maintain for fleet useage (scheduled and regular maintinance) and the engine is probably paid for by now. Its a solid powerplant IMO.

The OP is talking about the Denali, which I doubt has ever been considered for fleet usage.

OP, I would assume the 6.0 and all iron blocks are being phased out. To say the aluminum block won't hold up in the HD truck usage is a far stretch.

this is exactly correct. i spoke with a regional GM rep at my dealer a week ago and asked him this same question. what it comes down to is that the 6.0 is designed for maximum reliability. sure it may be down on power from the 6.2 but it is a workhorse. hopefully one day that make a 6.2 iron block variant or something

Doesn't matter if he is talking Denalli or regular HD 1500. I thought by my foggy memory the HD 1500's were built on the 2500 frame with the 1500's sheet metal. Part of the reason for the 6.0 was because it is the biggest gas engine you can get in the 2500 series.

Also to say the 6.0 is her forever is not really accurate. The emissions certification on engines is only good for new production for so many years, at some point GM will have to update with another engine or re-certify the 6.0 engine again.

The 6.0 is the only real HD gas engine - having 6 bolt HD main bearings ... which will allow much more heavy low rpm lugging (though not recommended) than the 5.3 or 6.2 and it's still a small block that rev's into the mid 5500 range (they will rev higher than a big block 400 427 454 455 though these have better low end torque but get real bad MPG)

these engines are perfect for performance build up to 500 HP without redoing the crank ... as in 60's muscle cars I see at car shows, they handle the 6000 lb truck weight much better than the LS1 LS2 LS3 vette motors that push just 3200 lbs

Hmm. Max tow packages avail on the 6.2 lets you tow almost what a 6.0 2500 will because the truck is so much heavier. Yet the 6.2 can't go in a 2500?? If gm put the 6.2 is a 2500 hd. I bet they would sell a ton of them. Lots of people with Trailers who only tow a few thousand km and welding rigs etc would go this way over a diesel truck

Give us back the 3.73 gears and option of 4.10 even with 8 speed.

Gm needs to can the old guys they kept when they cleaned house and get some younger blood in charge that will get with the times or do things that sell trucks ... #1 seller not 2 or 3

If they put it in a HD it would be detuned to the approximate power of the 5.3

The 1500 max tow is 12000 with 3.73

and the 2500 6.0 is 13000 with 4.10.

I don't think you can get the 2500 with 3.73 unless you get the Diesel (correct me if i am wrong) but if the 6.0 & 6.2 were geared the same I bet the numbers would match on that stat, but MPG is way better on the 6.2. I don't see why the 6.2 isn't the standard engine in the 2500. Agree that 6.0 is proven but many engines out of production were also proven and were replaced with newer better ones.

Differentials:

1500: 9.5

1500 Max Tow:9.76

2500:?

Payload and GVWR is also different due to frame/suspension. The 1500 "max tow" comes with 3.73, larger differential (9.76") and suspension just not up to 2500 level... could say it was in between a 1500 and 2500...so like a 2000.....

No 'optional' rear ends on 2015 2500's.

(L96) Vortec 6.0L V8 SFI 4.10

(LC8) 6.0L V8 SFI Gaseous 4.10

(LML) Duramax 6.6L Turbo Diesel V8 3.73

2015 1500's:

(LV3) 4.3L EcoTec3 V6 AFM DI VVT Flex Fuel aluminum block 3.23 3.42

(L83) 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 AFM DI VVT aluminum block 3.08 3.42 3.73

(L86) 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 AFM DI VVT aluminum block 3.23 3.42

On 2015 3500's there is one option on the LC8

(LC8) 6.0L V8 SFI Gaseous 3.73 4.10 (changes GCWR - 16000 to 20500)

(L96) Vortec 6.0L V8 SFI 4.10 20,500

(LML) Duramax 6.6L Turbo Diesel V8 3.73 24,500 or 30,500 with duals

Even though the 1500 max tow is close to the 2500, the advantage of the 2500 should be in GCVWR, right? My understanding is high tongue weight and a family of four may render that 1500 max tow rating useless, but a 2500 may fare much better. Plus, all the HD components should make it tow more confidently... If I'm off - tow experts, please let me know!

The 6.2 is a great engine, but we know a 6.0 will reliably perform well over 100k miles in HD workhorse applications.
